English Literature Tutor Seasonal, fixed-term

We are seeking an exceptional English Literature Tutor to support high-achieving A Level students and those preparing for competitive university admissions, including Oxbridge and other Russell Group institutions. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable love of literature, a strong academic pedigree, and the ability to stretch and challenge able learners. This is a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about the subject and who to guide students through both the A Level curriculum and the demands of top-tier university applications.


Key Responsibilities

Deliver outstanding one-to-one or small-group A Level English Literature tuition, tailored to individual exam boards (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).
Teach students how to engage critically and creatively with a wide range of literary texts genres, and critical theories.
Provide expert coaching in literary analysis, comparative essays, and structured argumentation.
Support students applying to top universities, particularly Oxbridge, with:
Personal statement development
English Literature Admissions Test (ELAT) preparation
Sample essay guidance
Inspire intellectual curiosity and build confidence through thought-provoking discussion and challenging material. Monitor student progress, provide regular
feedback, and adapt teaching strategies as needed


Person Specification

Essential
Qualifications:
A first or high 2:1 degree in English Literature from a top-tier university.


Experience:
A demonstrable and infectious passion for literature and literary scholarship.
In-depth knowledge of the A Level English Literature curriculum and its assessment objectives.
Previous experience in tutoring or teaching A Level students, with proven success.


Skills and Competencies
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.


Personal Qualities:
Organised, reliable, and responsive, with a student-centred approach.

Desirable
Qualifications:
A postgraduate qualification in English Literature or a related field.
A formal teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS), though not essential


Skills and Competencies
Familiarity with the Oxbridge admissions process and experience supporting students through it.
Familiarity with the ELAT and recent trends in Oxbridge admissions interviews.


Personal Qualities:
Ability to work with high-achieving students and encourage academic ambition.
