About the Internship

Sturgeon Capital provides tailored support to help portfolio companies develop or strengthen their impact measurement and management (IMM) systems. We are seeking an ambitious, enthusiastic, and mission-driven intern to assist with the delivery of our impact advisory offering and broader portfolio-wide IMM work this summer.

The intern will primarily support 1-2 portfolio companies in understanding, measuring, and communicating the companies’ impact, as well as in building relationships with other impact-focused funders and partners. In collaboration with Sturgeon’s investment and impact teams, the intern will support with creating a route to impact or theory of change, outlining an impact measurement framework and selecting relevant metrics, and designing customer insight surveys for the company, all while applying a gender lens. Beyond the advisory engagements, the intern may also contribute to other impact-related workstreams as needed, such as conducting research on priority impact themes, supporting impact assessments for potential investments, and helping to communicate insights through written content or presentations.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to work directly with exceptional founders and their teams, gain hands-on experience in impact investing, and support companies that contribute to social inclusion and economic prosperity in emerging markets.

Key Responsibilities

Over the course of three months, the intern will:

  • Participate in regular meetings with the impact team and selected portfolio companies.
  • Assess the current state of the companies’ IMM efforts and co-develop a tailored workplan.
  • Research the relevant market, industry and technology to understand the problem the company’s product or service is solving, the ultimate impact it seeks to achieve, and the underlying assumptions and risks that may undermine its impact delivery.
  • Contribute to assessing the company across the five dimensions of impact and developing a theory of change framework that illustrates the pathway from inputs to outcomes.
  • Support the selection of key impact metrics and suitable data collection methods aligned to the company’s business model, mission, and impact industry best practices.
  • Create impact messaging materials to help the company effectively communicate its impact story with external audiences.
  • Conduct stakeholder mapping to understand the impact investing landscape in emerging markets and to identify potential partners and investors to support the company’s impact objectives.
  • Support with other initiatives as needed.

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated passion for emerging markets and the opportunity for technology and entrepreneurship to tackle the core challenges that they face.
  • Familiarity with the impact investing sector and ideally some experience with impact measurement or monitoring and evaluation (M&E) tools.
  • Strong intercultural competency, self-awareness, intellectual curiosity, and the ability to see things from different perspectives.
  • Strong research and analytical skills with the ability to synthesise information from diverse sources, interpret data and extract meaningful insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to build relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Creative thinking, adaptability, and a proactive attitude to problem-solving and navigating ambiguity.
  • High level of initiative and organisation with strong project management skills and attention to detail.
