Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Salvage and Marine Operations (SALMO) Team as a Logistics Support Officer.

Please be advised that this post is based at a location within 10 miles of the MoD Abbey Wood address above, and in-office attendance will be required for a minimum of 3 days per week to foster the benefits of face-to-face collaboration while supporting work-life balance. Initially, you may need to attend more frequently to get acquainted with the site, the team, and your role.

We will provide you with the necessary training to become an experienced Logistic Support Officer, and a full member of the team, trained in practical salvage tasks. Logistics Support Officers are key to ensuring SALMO successfully deliver operations in the UK and overseas. Our logistics team arrange import and export of key equipment, and transportation in support of overseas operations, whilst in the UK they manage the warehouse to ensure sufficient stocks are available and accounted for, support the team by managing facilities, handle small-scale low-value procurement and oversee other infrastructure such as department vehicles.

Our SALMO team is the lead across the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in marine salvage and emergency response. Our specialists including Master Mariners, Marine Engineers, Naval Architects, Environmental Scientists, ROV (Remote Operated Vehicle) Pilots and Divers provide a centre of expertise for subsea activities and marine operations. Our varied operations include salvage assistance to damaged surface vessels, locating aircraft on the sea-bottom, surveying WWII wrecks, towing warships, and submarines, conducting emergency response preparedness exercises and providing underwater engineering support to resolve defects on Navy platforms both at home and overseas. The SALMO team is flexible, highly trained, and multi-skilled and are ready to respond worldwide at short notice.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Managing store’s accounts and inventory.
  • Facilities management of a maintenance workshop and warehouse.
  • Conducting Low Value Purchases as required for business needs.
  • Being the Key enabler for the deployment of personnel and equipment in direct support of operations.
  • Ensuring Timely Outward and Return Logistics of equipment including dangerous goods by land, sea and air using MOD and Commercial contracts.
  • Assisting colleagues to plan and manage platform/equipment spares, availability, and reliability.
  • Communicating with a wide range of stakeholders both within the MoD and Industry.
  • Performing duties overseas on short notice in direct support of operations as a member of the deployed team.
  • Being a full member of the team and trained in all aspects of operational requirements and duties.
  • Ensuring essential maintenance to the facilities appearance and functionality is undertaken along with any emergency repairs necessary to keep the premises compliant with legal requirements.
  • Occasional driving of vehicles to move stores & equipment between various UK sites.

This role is subject to Retained Grade Terms and Conditions and differ from the DE&S standard Terms and Conditions.

Due To The Nature Of This Role, You Are:

  • Required to be fit to pass and maintain a two-yearly ENG1 seafarers medical (no geographical limitations)
  • Required to enlist as a Royal Navy Sponsored Reserve
  • Expected to work extended hours as and when required in support of operational commitments
  • Required to live within 60 minutes travelling time of the base to which you are appointed
  • Required to hold an in-date UK driving licence

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  • Experience in shipping goods including dangerous cargo by road, Sea, and air
  • Holder of a Full UK Driving Licence Minimum Cat B
  • Experience in communications with internal and external stakeholders
  • Awareness and understanding of Dangerous Goods Regulations
  • Familiarity of Inventory Stores systems
