Assistant finance business partner

Sense

About the role

We are looking for an Assistant Finance Business Partner to join our Finance team at Sense. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your management accounting and business partnering experience, working closely with colleagues across our engagement and fundraising teams to provide meaningful financial insight, support effective decision-making and help ensure our resources are used where they can make the greatest impact.

Reporting to our Finance Business Partner, you will help deliver a high-quality financial support service, providing accurate management information, financial analysis and advice to colleagues across the organisation. You will play an important role in supporting our financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting processes, while building strong relationships with budget holders and helping non-finance colleagues understand the financial implications of their decisions.#

This is a full time, hybrid role working 2 days per week from our Birmingham office.

Key responsibilities

  • Supporting the preparation of monthly management accounts, including accruals, prepayments and financial reconciliations.
  • Assisting with annual budgets, forecasts and financial reporting across multiple cost centres.
  • Analysing financial performance, investigating variances and providing clear, meaningful commentary.
  • Reconciling financial information between our accounting system, Engagement CRM and other income sources.
  • Supporting the preparation and submission of Gift Aid claims.
  • Preparing financial reports for donor-funded projects, fundraising activities and other stakeholders.
  • Supporting the annual audit process and maintaining accurate financial records and controls.
  • Working closely with budget holders and non-finance colleagues to provide financial guidance and support.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve financial processes, reporting and ways of working.

About you

We are looking for someone who enjoys working with numbers but also understands the importance of building relationships and communicating financial information clearly.

You will be organised, analytical and proactive, with the confidence to work collaboratively across teams and contribute ideas for improvement.

You will bring

  • Previous experience working within a finance or management accounting environment.
  • Experience supporting budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting, ideally across multiple cost centres.
  • A good understanding of management accounting principles and accounting standards.
  • Strong Excel skills, including experience working with large datasets and using functions such as pivot tables and VLOOKUP.
  • Experience using computerised finance systems, ideally Infor SunSystems or similar.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills and the ability to meet competing deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to explain financial information to non-finance colleagues.
  • A collaborative approach and a genuine interest in contributing to the work of Sense.

An AAT qualification or progress towards a professional accounting qualification such as ACCA, CIMA or another CCAB qualification would be advantageous, alongside experience of charity accounting or working within a large, complex organisation.
