School Leaver - Junior Underwriter & Operations Assistant

G MASS

This is an entry-level opportunity for a school leaver to join a specialist, fast-growing London Market MGA. You do not need a degree. You will learn to underwrite a small-ticket US miscellaneous professional liability book, and you will also support the core operational processes behind the business.

You will work closely with the MGA’s founder and senior underwriting team, who will train and support you as you learn. You’ll handle a steady, high-volume flow of submissions on a modern, AI-enabled underwriting platform, apply underwriting guidelines and binder authority, and make sure business is quoted, bound and administered accurately and on time.

This is a hands-on role. You will learn how an MGA runs day to day, from broker submissions and underwriting decisions through to the operational discipline that supports capacity providers. As your skills develop and the book grows, there is a real opportunity to make it your own.

What you’ll be doing

  • Underwriting. You’ll review incoming US miscellaneous professional liability submissions and learn to underwrite them. This means applying underwriting guidelines and binder parameters, and referring risks outside your authority to senior underwriters.
  • Platform management. You’ll manage the submission pipeline on the MGA’s underwriting platform. That includes checking data it has picked up automatically, so that risk information is complete, accurate and correctly captured.
  • Growing the book. You’ll help grow the book from its current base by building relationships with brokers, responding quickly to quotes and queries, and helping increase submission volumes over time.
  • Operations support. You’ll help with day-to-day operational activity. This includes policy administration, documentation, and working with the finance and operations team.
  • Reporting. You’ll contribute to bordereaux, binder reporting and control checks. This helps the MGA show capacity providers that it has strong data quality and follows agreed procedures.
  • Improving processes. You’ll spot recurring issues and suggest practical improvements to how things are done, including where technology and automation can make the business more efficient.

Requirements

  • Education. A-levels or equivalent. A strong result in maths is helpful. A degree is not required.
  • Communication. You should be a clear, polite and professional communicator, by phone and email, and keen to build good relationships with brokers and colleagues.
  • Curiosity. You’ll need a strong aptitude for learning, a real interest in insurance and how a business works, and the confidence to ask questions. No insurance or office experience is required. Full training will be given.
  • Data skills. You should be comfortable using Excel and keen to build your skills. Experience with formulas such as lookups or pivot tables is a plus, but we will help you learn. You should be quick to pick up new systems and technology.
  • Accuracy. You should be methodical, detail-oriented and reliable, and take pride in getting things right first time.
  • Organisation. You’ll need to manage your own workload, handle a high volume of smaller tasks, and balance different priorities in a small team.
  • Drive. You’ll need hunger, initiative and a willingness to get involved in whatever the business needs as it scales.

For a school leaver who wants early responsibility, direct exposure to senior underwriters and the chance to grow with an expanding business, this role is an exceptional entry point into the London Market and a real alternative to university. There is clear potential to progress into a fuller underwriting career or a senior operational position as the MGA continues to scale.
