Position Description

Position Summary

The Department of Biblical, Religious, & Philosophical Studies in the School of Arts, Culture, & Society at Messiah University invites applications for a faculty position in Biblical Studies beginning August 1, 2027.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include:

• General education Bible courses.
• Courses within the department’s major course of study.
• Participation in the University’s interdisciplinary curriculum and/or First-Year Seminar program.
• Advising and mentoring students.
• Participation in departmental and institutional service.
• Scholarly and professional engagement appropriate to the position.

Qualifications

A Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (e.g., Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Christian Scriptures/New Testament, Second Temple Literature, Hermeneutics)

Candidates Should Demonstrate

• Strong commitment to teaching undergraduate students in the liberal arts tradition.
• Ability to contribute effectively to the departmental curricula.
• Commitment to the integration of Christian faith and academic study.
• Capacity to contribute to Messiah University’s Christian educational mission.
• Scholarly competence appropriate to the position.
• Candidate must fully support our female students as they prepare for ministry in the church at all levels.

The Program

The department of Biblical, Religious Studies, & Philosophical Studies offers four academic majors: Biblical and Religious Studies, Christian Ministries & Leadership, Philosophy, and Youth Ministries. Additionally, the department provides general education courses for all undergraduate students.

The Department

The department of Biblical, Religious Studies, & Philosophical Studies is a community of students and Christian scholars who specialize in biblical studies, Christian ministries, philosophy, religious history, theology, & world religions.

Our goal is to model and encourage informed thinking about Christian faith and practice and the role of religion in the world. We foster spiritual and theological reflection that enables individuals to develop and deepen Christian commitment, interpret matters of faith intelligently, and minister to others with wisdom and compassion.

The University

Messiah University is a Christian university of the liberal and applied arts and sciences and has a student body of over 2,700 undergraduate students including 21.3% under-represented and 1.5% international students from 23 countries and over 900 graduate students including 28.1% of students from under-represented populations.

Starting Date for Position August, 2027 Compensation

Salary And Rank Commensurate With Qualifications And Experience.
