About The Role

We’re looking for the right person to spend time with a young child who enjoys having fun, social time, and getting out and about, but also needs support to stay safe and manage his health and wellbeing.

This isn’t a standard care role. It’s about building a genuine connection – someone who can spend time with him, chat, joke, do things together, and help him make the most of life while being there when he needs support.

Some days are easy and full of fun, others aren’t – so we need someone who can go with the flow and take things in their stride.

About The Young Person

We are looking for a caring, reliable and enthusiastic Personal Assistant to provide one-to-one support for a bright, energetic and creative nine-year-old boy with Autistic Spectrum Disorder/ Nuro diversity.

The role involves supporting him to access activities within the local community, helping him enjoy new experiences, develop confidence and independence, and always ensuring his safety and wellbeing. Flexibility is essential, and the hours of work will be arranged by mutual agreement with the family.

He is a happy, intelligent and imaginative young boy who enjoys spending time in large open spaces where he can run, play and express himself freely. He also has a keen interest in arts and crafts and enjoys creative activities. Enclosed indoor play centres are another favourite, as they provide a safe environment where he can enjoy active play.

As he is autistic, he experiences sensory sensitivities and can find busy, noisy or crowded places overwhelming. He benefits from calm, patient support from someone who understands his needs and can recognise when he is becoming anxious or overstimulated. At these times, he may need reassurance, clear communication and the opportunity to move to a quieter environment to help him regulate and feel comfortable.

The successful Personal Assistant will support him to access the community safely while encouraging his interests and promoting his confidence and independence. It is important to provide calm, consistent support, plan activities that are suitable for his needs, and remain aware of potential risks when out and about.

Close supervision is essential at all times, as he may occasionally run off unexpectedly. The Personal Assistant must always know where he is and be able to respond quickly to ensure his safety. Good awareness, forward planning and vigilance are therefore key aspects of this role.

He also requires occasional support with toileting. Before leaving home or any activity, he should always be encouraged to use the toilet, as he may not always recognise when he needs to go and can occasionally have accidents. Any support with personal care should be provided sensitively, respectfully and in a way that maintains his dignity.

We are looking for someone who is kind, patient, reliable and trustworthy, with a positive attitude and a genuine interest in supporting children with additional needs. The ideal candidate will enjoy being active, be confident engaging in play and community activities, and be able to build a warm, trusting relationship with both the young person and his family. Experience of supporting autistic children or young people, or those with additional support needs, would be desirable but is not essential, as a willingness to learn and an understanding approach are equally valued.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference to a young person’s life by helping him safely access his community, enjoy activities that he loves, and continue to develop his confidence, independence and social skills in a supportive and enjoyable way.
