Job Overview

The average daily emergency “take” in Adult Medicine is 35 patients (+25 for Care of the Elderly) and the average length of stay of < 4-5 days. Consultant post-take ward rounds are carried out continuously in the EQ (Emergency Quadrant) There are over 6,000 emergency admissions each year to Adult Medicine, with a further 4,000 annual admissions to Care of the Elderly.

The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine has twice-weekly sessions of postgraduate and audit activity, including a weekly Physicians’ Grand Round. There is also a weekly lunchtime Clinical Conference. The Division has a regular teaching commitment with resident students from Cardiff, Manchester and Liverpool, with the majority of appointed from these Universities. A core curriculum is taught to Foundation Year Ones and SHOs/FY2’s, and there are also regular MRCP tutorials. There is a dedicated Clinical Governance Unit and Audit Office with permanent staff.

Main duties of the job

The candidate will be responsible, both professionally and managerially, to Dr H Nair clinical lead for acute medicine. You will also be supervised by a team of consultants (08.00 hrs till 18.00 hrs, who will be present in the EQ.

  • The job will be providing cover to the medical patients in the EQ from 08.00 hrs until 18.00 hrs on a day-to-day basis and is not part of the on-call rota.
  • Provide in reach to Emergency Department patients that require review post ward rounds.
  • Advising and liaising with GPs, preventing admission and utilising alternative appropriate pathways.
  • Cover within SDEC to review of GP admission patients (as per the national SDEC model patient management)
  • Cover within SDEC to review patients within ward and re-attenders / redirected from ED
  • Implement Hot-Clinics for rapid review of appropriate patients
  • Support with medical patients alongside the ANP’s and medical residents (EQ)
  • Liaising with multi-disciplinary teams and other specialities
  • Participate in Clinical Audit and CPD, which is fully supported by the Health Board.
  • You are responsible to adhere to GMC guidelines and practices and be held accountable to the clinical Director for EQ and Clinical Director for Medicine.

Glan Clwyd Hospital opened in 1980 and is a modern District General Hospital providing a comprehensive range of services to the population of North Wales, between Llandudno and Flint and the adjacent inland rural communities. It serves a population of approximately 220,000 with a considerable influx of holidaymakers in the summer months. There are 513 acute hospital beds on the Glan Clwyd site. There are additional in-patient beds at Abergele Hospital (Ophthalmology Department and Orthopaedic). An Acute Psychiatric Unit (Ablett Unit) is located on the Glan Clwyd site, as is the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre, which provides care for the North Wales population.

The Division of Emergency and Integrated Medicine includes eight medical wards, including an 8-bedded Cardiac Care Unit , a 28 bedded Acute Medicine Unit and three Care of the Elderly wards. There is also a busy Emergency Department, a Gastroenterology Unit and a Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory within the Division. The Renal and Diabetes Centre attached to the site was opened in September 2004.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • MBBS
  • GMC

Desirable criteria

  • Successful completion of 1 of the 3 UK advanced life support provider training courses (ALS, ATLS and APLS) or equivalent courses

Eligibility

Essential Criteria

  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competences in line with GMC standards/ Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of FY2 acute & general medical competences
  • At least 12 months experience at FY1 and FY2 level

Desirable criteria

  • Evidence of experience in such as
  • Medical specialties e.g. cardiology, COTE medicine and respiratory medicine
  • Surgical specialties, such as Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic, Plastic, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, General or Oral-Maxillofacial surgery.
