Parent Governor - Bitterne Park Secondary and 6th Form

Bitterne Park School

We currently have a vacancy for a parent governor to join our board. Please see below for further information on the role.

What do governors do?
Governors do not manage the school day-to-day, but are required to oversee its long-term development including oversight of financial management and strategic planning.

What is the role of a parent governor?
As a parent governor, you will work with the board to make sure it effectively carries out its duties. You will also play a vital role in bringing a parental perspective to the governing board, but you are not there to speak 'on behalf' of the parent body.

To be a parent governor, you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
  • Good interpersonal skills, curiosity and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • The specific skills required to make sure the governing board delivers effective governance.

What skills do I need?
We would welcome applications from individuals that have a variety of backgrounds and skills including (but not limited to) finance, health and safety, data interpretation, HR and legal expertise.

What is the time commitment?
Governors meet 6 times a year as a full governing board, one evening per half term. Governors are expected to prepare for the meetings by reading the papers beforehand. Meetings currently run 17:15 to 19:15, at school. There is a Staff & Resources Committee which meets each half term and considers areas such as school finance, buildings, health and safety and HR in more detail. We also have a Students & Curriculum Committee which focusses on matters relating to the national curriculum, SEND, careers, progress and achievement and student wellbeing. In addition, some governors take on roles specific to their field of expertise or interest.

If you would like to find out more about the role and how to apply, please contact Charley Baines: [email protected].

Closing date: Wednesday 15th July 2026
