Band & Salary: Band 5 £30,000 - £34,000 depending on experience
About the role
What does the average day look like?
The successful candidate will support electronics production activities to facilitate timely delivery and overall operational efficiency in our factory in Weston-super-Mare.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Conduct detailed PCBA inspection and test, verifying compliance with technical specifications, quality standards, and functional requirements.
- Perform assembly of electronic sub-assemblies and final units, ensuring components are correctly installed and mechanically secured in accordance with engineering drawings and work instructions.
- Functional testing on assembled units, documenting results and identifying any faults or deviations.
- Follow established operating, quality assurance, safety, and environmental protocols, maintaining accurate records and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
Your key skills should include but not be limited to:
- Hands-on electronics assembly and testing experience. Comfortable working with PCBAs, soldering, and using test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators.
- Awareness of root cause analysis and fault diagnosis methodologies. Skilled in identifying, analysing, and resolving technical issues in electronic systems.
- Process documentation and reporting. Able to produce clear, concise test and inspection records.
About the team
Engineering Services is a function within Route Services. We sit as a central team to provide national skills and activities which enable regions and industry partners to deliver the railway for our customers.
As a large central functional team which focus on engineering delivery, we have many roles from pure engineering to project management and touch every part of the railway from track, power, signalling to the lifts and escalators which are essential to keep our stations moving.
Being multi-disciplinary means we have great opportunities to work in design, development or even the delivery of activities such as our own points operating equipment which move trains from one track to another up to 125mph.
We are recruiting for a specific role within the Network Rail Technology Development Team (TDT), who design and manufacture the High Performance Switch System (HPSS), which is a type of Point Operating Equipment (POE) that is in service across Network Rail's infrastructure. TDT supply new HPSS systems, plus operational spares, tooling, repairs and full product support from their factory in Weston-super-Mare.
On time delivery of safe and reliable HPSS equipment for use in the operational railway is at the forefront of our business, and we are now recruiting for an enthusiastic, motivated and inspiring individual to join the team as an Assistant Electronics Engineer to support our achievement of this goal.
Your experience and skills
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for someone who thrives on precision and takes pride in quality. You will have hands-on experience in electronics production or testing and will be contributing to the safety and reliability of the UK rail network.
Essential Criteria
- Electrical/Electronic HNC/HND or equivalent qualification/experience
- Experience as technician/tester & within an engineering role
- Ability to build Test fixtures, including good mechanical & electronics assembly, soldering and wiring skills
- Knowledge of analogue and digital circuits and able to interpret complex circuit schematics
- Good written & verbal communication skills, ability to articulate technical information and good computer literacy
- Proven customer focus with flexibility to respond rapidly to customer demands

Desirable Criteria
- Level 2 or Level 3 Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (e.g., BTEC or City & Guilds).
- NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Performing Engineering Operations or similar vocational qualifications.
- HNC/HND in Electronic Engineering.
- Degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of experience (Level 6).
- Membership of a relevant technical body.
Knowledge of the railway industry and an understanding of railway infrastructure.
