The team supports the Adults and Children’s Social Care directorates and is responsible for undertaking accurate means tested financial assessments, identifying potential entitlement to welfare benefits and providing information to people who receive care and support services on how these can be claimed.

We are seeking to recruit a professional, approachable, and customer-focused caseworker with experience in finance to support the team. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering and maintaining a high-quality, customer-focused service.

What will you be doing?

  • Working with customers or their appointed representatives to obtain and analyse financial information to calculate how much they need to pay towards the cost of care and support.
  • Inputting financial information using the Council’s computerised systems to process community and residential care charges.
  • Identifying welfare benefits that may be available to claim and take follow up action.
  • Supporting customers, their representatives and social care practitioners to resolve care charge queries.
  • Dealing with and making decisions on complex cases, such as backdated charges,

deprivation of assets, disability related expenditure, and deferred payments. This may include

reporting potential safeguarding concerns in respect of financial abuse.

What knowledge, skills, and experience do you need?

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the Care and Support (Charging and Assessment of Resources) Regulations, the Care and Support (Deferred Payment) Regulations and the care and support statutory guidance.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to use the telephone, arrange meetings for your workload, communicate via emails and letters.
  • Proven ability to use computerised systems to enter information and accurately input data.
  • Able to interpret and apply rules, some of which may be complex, to carry out a financial assessment.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision, organising and prioritising your workload.

Why should you work for us?

  • There’s a supportive feel to our team; we have approachable and supportive managers who have an open door and are willing to listen.
  • We are proud to offer an environment that is rewarding, working as part of a team who are passionate about the work they do to improve the lives of people in Calderdale.
  • You would be one of around 3000 people working for Calderdale with wide ranging skills and expertise. These are colleagues you can collaborate with, teach, learn from and have fun working with.
  • We provide a generous annual leave entitlement which increases by 5 days after 5 years' service with the organisation and also offer flexible working hours.
  • Hybrid/Homeworking is a key feature of this role, attending other work places as required. Our excellent technology and equipment will enable you to connect and collaborate from anywhere.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expect all staff to share this commitment. Applicants to posts that are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act will require an Enhanced DBS from the Disclosure and Barring Service before the appointment is confirmed.
