Senior Clinical Fellows in Emergency Medicine
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust
We are recruiting for clinical fellows for a fixed 12-month period from August 2026 to August 2027.
These purely clinical roles will provide excellent exposure to the full range of urgent and emergency care presentations, with full senior support and excellent educational opportunities. We are seeking applicants who wish to commit to a 12-month post – indeed many of our current cohort of clinical fellows are extending their contracts to stay with us longer. We welcome applicants who might be interested in shorter contracts, but preference is given to those who commit for a year.
Emergency Medicine is evolving rapidly, with our departments benefitting from co-located Urgent Treatment Centres, dedicated paediatric facilities and spacious resuscitation rooms. At University Hospitals Sussex Western Site Emergency Departments (Worthing and St. Richard’s, Chichester), we are recognised for our dynamic multidisciplinary staff who are passionate about patient care and staff education. Many of our Consultant team are actively involved in education locally, regionally and nationally, with several being Royal College of Emergency Medicine Examiners. We are proud of our high success rate in supporting residents in successful speciality training applications and examination success.
The Clinical Duties Of The Post Include The Following
It is expected that the successful applicant(s) undertake full clinical duties on the resident doctor rota suitable for their level of experience including but not limited to:
- Responsible for all clinical aspects of Emergency work supported by senior clinicians as appropriate.
- Attendance in weekly teaching sessions which include clinical governance.
- Maintaining high quality contemporaneous clinical notes.
- Reviewing reports of radiology investigations for patients you manage and dealing with unexpected results with assistance of supervising consultants as needed.
The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
At UHSussex, diversity is our strength, and we want you to feel included to help us always deliver Excellent Care Everywhere, as shown in our Outstanding for Caring CQC rating.
Your uniqueness and experiences will be part of our creative and innovative community where everyone is encouraged to succeed. We have a range of staff networks to help break down barriers, and can offer a buddy to help new members settle in.
We’re proud to be a Disability Confident Employer (Level 3) and a Veteran Aware Trust.
