What you need to know about the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join British Steel in our Steelmaking department as a Health & Safety Manager!

In this role, you’ll provide the Management team with expert guidance in the development and implementation of the H&S Strategy for Steelmaking. You’ll also provide continual improvements in Health & Safety performance within the Steelmaking function.

Key Responsibilities

As Health & Safety Manager, you’ll be responsible for ensuring the effective management of Health and Safety systems, adherence to the business safety policy and the continuing safety improvement plans. Other responsibilities include:

  • Lead, manage and develop a team of H&S Facilitators to deliver effective support across Steelmaking
  • Provide visible leadership to promote a positive Health & Safety culture and drive continual improvement in performance
  • Engage with operational management to ensure accountability for Health & Safety at all levels.
  • Ensure the effective implementation and maintenance of the British Steel Health & Safety management system
  • Assess the impact of internal and external influences on Health & Safety processes and recommend appropriate improvements
  • Support the development and delivery of site Health & Safety improvement plans
  • Support or lead investigations as required to establish root cause analysis
  • Promote sharing and learning to prevent recurrence and improve performance
  • Support operational teams in the management of critical risks, including high-hazard activities
  • Promote workforce engagement and involvement in Health & Safety activities
  • Support initiatives that improve risk awareness and encourage safe behaviours
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of a strong safety culture across the site
  • Chair senior management safety meetings and maintain relevant dash boards

What we need to know about you

The position requires an effective communicator with strong leadership and influencing skills and a commitment to continual improvement and development of the teams and strategies.

  • Significant HSE management experience
  • Degree level education (preferred)
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum)
  • Experienced auditor
  • Significant experience in heavy industry
  • Strong analytical skills and able to identify trends and themes using data
  • A strategic and forward thinker
  • Expert communicator
  • Good level of computer skills
  • Strong coaching & mentoring skills
  • Calm under pressure and effective in meeting deadlines
