About the role

We’re looking for a Commercial Manager to join Balfour Beatty’s Major Projects team, based in Derby, supporting a flagship Rolls-Royce programme. This is a key role within the project Commercial team, where you’ll play a central part in driving the commercial and financial success of a high-profile, technically complex project.

As Commercial Manager, you’ll take ownership of the full project lifecycle—from early-stage involvement and tendering, through contract negotiation and agreement, to the effective commercial delivery of works on site. You’ll be responsible for managing costs and maximising value, while providing clear commercial leadership across the project and wider supply chain.

Working as an integral part of the project delivery team, you’ll contribute to decision-making at every stage, balancing risk, opportunity, and performance to ensure successful outcomes. This role offers the opportunity to work on a nationally significant programme, collaborating with industry-leading teams while helping shape best-in-class commercial standards within Balfour Beatty.

  • Leading the commercial management of Task Orders on the Rolls-Royce Fissile Programme in Derby, initially focusing on ECI and enabling works, progressing into full civil engineering delivery.
  • Acting as an integral member of the project Commercial team, taking responsibility for the financial management of projects from inception through tendering, contract negotiation, and successful commercial delivery.
  • Managing all commercial aspects of the project, including risk management, contract administration, financial reporting, and supply chain management.
  • Operating in a cost-reimbursable environment, with responsibility for delivering projects under NEC (Option E) forms of contract.
  • Providing commercial leadership, while supporting and mentoring junior team members and contributing to their professional development.
  • Maintaining professional standards, including ongoing CPD, with Chartered status (RICS, ICES or CIOB) expected.

Qualifications (essential or working towards):

  • BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent)
  • Membership of RICS, ICES or CIOB (or working towards)
  • CSCS card (Professionally Qualified Person)
  • Ability to obtain BPSS clearance as a minimum (SC clearance preferred) prior to starting

Experience and capability:

  • Strong working knowledge of NEC4 contracts, ideally with experience operating under Option E (cost reimbursable) environments
  • Proven experience in a Commercial Management role, ideally within civil engineering or infrastructure projects
  • Experience managing projects within complex or secure environments is advantageous, but not essential
