The Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit (MCU) is part of the Joint Protective Services Directorate with responsibility for the investigation of major crime across the tri-force area. The MCU is based from two hubs: in the south at Hertfordshire Police Headquarters, Welwyn Garden City and in the north at Cambridgeshire Police Headquarters, Hinchingbrooke, Huntingdon.

The Major Crime Unit investigation remit incorporates but is not exclusive to Homicide (Murder, Manslaughter, Attempted Murder), Kidnap, Blackmail, and Extortion.

We are now hiring for a full time Investigator, who will be based in the Outside enquiry team at the Northern hub. This is a rare and very exciting opportunity to join a team of highly motivated investigators who deal with the most serious criminal offences and who enjoy an extremely high success rate.

The Police Staff Assistant Investigator role requires the holder to conduct enquiries as directed by the Senior Investigating Officer (or their deputy and the appropriate line manager).

Your team will consist of approximately six officers and staff with line management by a Detective Sergeant. There are five teams which make up the Outside Enquiry team.

It is desirable but not essential that the successful candidate has previous investigative experience/Pip 1 accredited. We are looking for the right candidate for the role.

This post is based in Huntingdon but there will be a requirement to travel and work from bases across the tri-force area and beyond.

Every day is different whatever your role in policing, so here’s a brief overview of your day-to-day responsibilities:

  • Taking statements from victims and witnesses
  • Completing house to house enquiries
  • Scoping and viewing of CCTV footage
  • Review of call data and mobile devices
  • Assisting with case file building
  • Fulfilling the role of Disclosure or exhibits officer for investigations falling outside of the MCU remit
  • Giving evidence in court
  • Witness management
  • Undertake training as a Family liaison officer
  • Contributing to achieving the vision, purpose, and values of the JPS Major Crime Unit.

Please note that due to the high level of vetting for this role, 7 years of UK residency is required.

Please note: This role has been identified as high-risk in relation to potential DNA contamination within forensic processes. As such, successful candidates will be required to provide a DNA mouth swab and Fingerprint elimination sample as part of their pre-employment checks.

The sample will be used to conduct a speculative search against our database and then solely for contamination elimination purposes and held on a secure elimination database in accordance with the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR.

Provision of this sample is a condition of employment for roles identified as high-risk.
