Job Summary
The role of the Maternity Care Assistant (MCA) is to support the delivery of high quality safe care to women and babies. The MCA will be a competent individual, working as a member of the Midwifery Team, following appropriate competency based training. The MCA will work within in direct supervision of a registered Midwife and be guided by the Midwive's expertise, within the remit of their role. The MCA will work with individual women, families and in group settings throughout the pregnancy and postnatal period.
The MCA will undertake a range of duties including: personal care of women and babies, providing information and advice on self-care, infant care and initiating breast feeding, health promotion, clerical, educational and housekeeping duties to ensure the smooth running of the Midwifery Team.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
COMMUNICATION
- To establish and maintain excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication between the midwifery and multidisciplinary team, women and their families
- To follow written and verbal instructions from the registered midwife in relation to the care of the woman and baby
- To clearly document all care given to the woman and baby in accordance with the Trusts guidelines, maintaining charts as necessary
- To respect the confidentiality of information at all times
- To ensure that complaints or concerns are escalated to the midwife in charge as soon as possible
- To participate in team meetings and to be an effective member of the team
- To work in collaboration and partnership with the multi-agency and multidisciplinary teams
CLINICAL: GENERAL
- To provide specific clinical care tasks (i.e. IV cannula and urinary catheter removal, emptying catheters, obtain urine samples and urinalysis) under direction of the midwife and after appropriate training
- To undertake maternal observations including temperature, pulse, blood pressure, saturations, MEWS, and weight. Report any deviations from the normal range to the midwife
- To obtain baby urine samples in a hospital setting only
- To promote good hand hygiene and minimise the spread of infection. Take personal responsibility and accountability for own infection prevention and control practice

Qualifications
Essential
- Evidence of Maths/English qualifications at Level 2 or above.
- Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
- Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C) Level 2 Diploma in health care support / NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2.
- Internationally educated applicants will have to evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility.
Desirable
- Care Certificate or can demonstrate prior skills, knowledge and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health
Experience
Essential
- Experience of working / participating as part of a team as an employee /volunteer.
- Ability to demonstrate/ articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties.
- Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role.
- Can explain why training / education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience.
Desirable
- Has experience of working in a person centred / facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
- Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role
- Awareness of the National Health Education England (HEE) Maternity Support Worker Competency, Education and Career Development Framework
