The Opportunity

Barnsley College is seeking a motivated and inspiring Teacher – Public Services to join our Sport, Public Services & Travel department. This is an exciting opportunity to deliver high‑quality teaching across a range of courses, supporting learners to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours required for progression within the public services sector.

Working closely with Course Leaders and colleagues, you will contribute to a dynamic and engaging curriculum that challenges learners, raises aspirations and supports them to achieve their full potential. This is a fantastic opportunity to shape learners’ progression into careers such as the police, armed forces, fire service and wider public service roles.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Teacher in Public Services, you will plan, prepare and deliver engaging and effective teaching and learning activities that meet the needs of learners across a range of programmes. You will use a variety of teaching methodologies to ensure learners remain motivated, challenged and able to achieve their learning goals.

You will assess learner work regularly, providing clear and constructive feedback to support progress and achievement. Through initial assessments and ongoing monitoring, you will adapt your teaching to meet individual learner needs, contributing to the development and updating of individual learning plans.

You will create a positive and inclusive learning environment that fosters strong working relationships, encourages participation and supports learners to develop confidence and independence. You will also contribute to curriculum planning and development, ensuring teaching materials and delivery approaches remain relevant and effective.

In addition, you will support and lead enrichment activities, including trips, visits and residential experiences, helping learners to develop practical skills and gain real‑world insight into the sector. You will work collaboratively with external partners and organisations to enhance the learner experience and support progression opportunities.

About You

You will be a passionate and learner‑focused professional with a strong background in public services or a related sector. You will bring relevant occupational experience alongside the ability to deliver engaging and inspiring teaching that prepares learners for their future careers.

You will be an excellent communicator, able to build positive and professional relationships with learners, colleagues and external partners. You will have the ability to motivate and inspire learners, supporting both their academic and personal development.

With strong organisational skills and a proactive approach, you will be able to manage your workload effectively while contributing to the wider success of the department. You will be flexible, enthusiastic and solutions‑focused, with a commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining high standards of teaching and learning.

Essential Skills, Qualifications and Experience

· Degree (or equivalent qualification) in a relevant subject area or significant sector experience

· Teaching qualification (or willingness to work towards – for example Level 6 PGCE if not already held)

· GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2 qualification)

· Relevant occupational experience within the sector(s)

· Knowledge and ability to teach sport or public services curriculum subjects
