About The Role

HSDC is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and inspiring Lecturer of Counselling to deliver high-quality teaching to adult learners across Levels 1 to 3.

This role focuses on supporting learners to develop knowledge, understanding and practical skills in counselling, enabling progression into further study, volunteering, or careers in the sector.

The successful candidate will deliver engaging teaching, assessment and academic support, fostering a safe, inclusive and reflective learning environment. You will work collaboratively across campuses to support curriculum development, quality improvement and learner success.

The ideal candidate will hold a relevant counselling qualification at Level 4 or above (or equivalent)

The successful candidate will ideally hold a relevant degree or equivalent qualification, alongside a recognised teaching qualification such as a PGCE or Cert Ed. Qualifications in Assessing and Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) are also desirable. However, all staff at HSDC can enrol on our Level 3 Education and Training Award to become competent in classroom, if they have enough relevant industry experience.

Responsibilities

  • Planning and delivering high-quality teaching, learning and assessment across Counselling Levels 1–3
  • Delivering scheduled lessons, and assessments
  • Preparing schemes of work and lesson plans aligned to specifications
  • Monitoring and tracking learner progress using College systems
  • Setting, marking and moderating coursework and assessments in line with awarding body requirements
  • Providing effective academic and pastoral support to adult learners
  • Supporting learners with progression opportunities
  • Maintaining accurate records of attendance, assessment and learner progress
  • Contributing to quality improvement processes, course reviews and assessment standardisation
  • Participating in team meetings and sharing good practice

Requirements

Essential

  • Level 4 (or above) qualification in Counselling or related subject
  • Counselling skills and theory
  • Ethical frameworks and professional practice
  • Ability to deliver effective teaching/training to adult learners
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to provide appropriate academic and pastoral support, including managing sensitive discussions
  • Confident use of IT to support learning
  • Commitment to safeguarding, equality and diversity

Desirable

  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed or equivalent)
  • Assessor qualification (TAQA/CAVA)
  • IQA qualification or willingness to achieve
  • Experience teaching counselling or related subjects (L1–L3)
  • Membership of a professional body (e.g. BACP)
  • Experience working in a counselling or support role
