About the Role

An Opportunity to Lead, Inspire and Make a Lasting Difference

Following the retirement of our current Head of School we are seeking an inspirational, creative and collaborative leader to join Central Hub Brighton as Interim Head of School for the Primary Team.

This is a unique opportunity to play a key leadership role within the city’s alternative provision, working in close partnership with the Head Teacher and Primary staff to transform outcomes for young people at a crucial stage in their education.

About Central Hub Brighton

Central Hub Brighton is the Local Authority’s alternative provision, providing support across three key stages and four sites, including:

  • The Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), working across KS2 to 4 on a variety of short and longer term programmes.
  • Primary and Middle School provision for EHCP students
  • The Connected Hub, supporting Year 11 students to re-engage, achieve their GCSEs, and move successfully into their next phase

Our work is underpinned by a trauma-informed, attachment-aware approach, supporting young people with SEMH

The Role

The Primary school is based at our Connaught Road site and works with young people with EHCPs

As Interim Head of School, you will

  • Lead the day-to-day operations of the Primary School
  • Contribute strategically to the wider organisation
  • Inspire and develop a committed staff team
  • Deliver a creative and inclusive curriculum
  • Ensure every young person is supported to succeed
  • Work in partnership with the SENCO to ensure identified needs are met

The role provides a chance to

  • Gain senior leadership experience in an alternative provision setting
  • Extend your strategic and operational expertise
  • Work collaboratively across schools in Brighton & Hove
  • Make a meaningful impact on young people’s futures

We Are looking for Someone Who

  • Is passionate about supporting young people with barriers to learning
  • Can lead a creative and engaging curriculum
  • Thrives in a challenging yet rewarding environment
  • Values collaboration and teamwork
  • Brings energy, resilience and strong leadership

Safeguarding

The Central Hub is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people at all times. The headteacher will be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of all children, in accordance with our Safeguarding policy. The successful candidate will be required to undergo an Enhanced Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau.

Equal Opportunities

The headteacher will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Equalities Act 2010.

Encouraging a diverse workforce

Our city is known and loved for its diversity. Not only is the mixture of people, culture and skills vital to the economic and social development of the city, it's what makes Brighton & Hove such a great place to live, work and visit. We are committed to developing and retaining a workforce that is representative of the diverse communities we serve so we welcome applications from individuals from all backgrounds. In order to achieve our aims of proportionate representation, we particularly encourage applicants from a global majority or White Other background as well as those who identify as disabled, male or trans.

AI advice for candidates

We are interested in hearing about your experience and skills in your own words. While we value people who know how to use AI, we ask that you minimise using it in your application.

We are keen to hear how your experience and skills align to our values and the skills and experience needed to perform well in our roles with clear real examples from you. To support you in this, we have guidance on using the STAR model which can help you ensure you are telling us your whole story. We also provide clarity on the skills we are looking for in our adverts and in the job description/person specification attached to each job advert.

All the applications we receive are read by at least two hiring managers and we do not use AI in this process. Our experience of reading applications is that those that have heavily used AI contain generic paragraphs that are strikingly similar to other applicants’ responses. This makes it extremely difficult to differentiate between applications and doesn't give us enough evidence of your individual skills. There is a risk that we will therefore not be able to shortlist you. Instead, we recommend you ensure your application stands out by presenting clear examples of your actual skills and experiences in your own words.
