This is an exciting 2-year opportunity to join Durham’s Educational Psychology Service, part of the wider SEND and Inclusion Service, supporting vulnerable learners across the county. This role is ideal for individuals considering a future career in applied or educational psychology and offers valuable, hands-on experience within a highly supportive, multi-disciplinary team.
About the Role
Our service is committed to improving the wellbeing, achievement, and resilience of vulnerable children and young people. We work collaboratively with schools and partners to build their capacity to support pupils across:
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH)
- Cognition and Learning (C&L)
- Communication and Interaction (C&I)
As an Assistant Psychologist, you will contribute to this impactful work by supporting a wide range of activities across the service.
What You’ll Be Doing
You’ll be part of a skilled and supportive multi-disciplinary team, working alongside Educational Psychologists, Advisory and Inclusion Teachers, Counsellors, and Inclusion Support staff. Your work will include:
- Supporting assessment, screening, and consultation relating to SEMH needs within school settings
- Contributing to advice and guidance on how needs impact learning and inclusion
- Delivering and supporting interventions at individual, group, and whole-class levels
- Assisting with school development work to strengthen inclusive practice
- Helping deliver training and network support for evidence-based programmes
- Supporting research and evaluation, contributing to the development of evidence-informed practice across the service

Essential requirements
- A Psychology degree (2:1 or above)
- Eligibility for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)
- Experience of working with children and young people in an educational or relevant setting
- Experience in at least one of the following areas: SEMH, C&L, or C&I
- Experience of research and evaluation
- A genuine passion for applying psychology to improve outcomes for children and young people
