The Role

The post holder will be capable of functioning autonomously and independently in accordance with protocols and evidence based guidelines and must make professional, autonomous decisions for which they are accountable. The post holder will undertake reviews of respiratory patients in a variety of in-patient settings. This will include history taking, physical examination, prescribing and difficult conversations. They will act as a resource for nursing and medical staff and will initiate and participate in service improvement and audit.

In This Key Role, You Will

  • Review out-patient respiratory referrals and forward to appropriate clinic/service or provide advice.
  • Assess, advise and order long term oxygen therapy for patients including performing ABGs.
  • Perform pleural procedures independently, adhering to protocols. This will include but is not limited to chest drain flush, talc pleurodesis, diagnostic aspiration, insertion of intercostal chest drains and indwelling pleural catheters.
  • Teach and supervise selected medical and nursing staff to perform pleural procedures.
  • Undertake training on chest radiology including, chest ultrasound, chest radiograph and computed tomography.
  • Perform chest ultrasound and identify safe place for aspirate or drain.
  • Identify radiological abnormalities and discuss with a Respiratory Consultant.
  • Participate in MDT/TRM. This will include case presentations.

What You'll Bring

  • Registered Healthcare practitioner with valid UK Registration (NMC / HCPC)
  • Educated to/working towards/operating at Masters Level
  • Post graduate* expertise within speciality / area of practice that demonstrates the required breadth of knowledge required to lead safety, effectively and efficiently.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical guidelines and standards within the speciality.
