About the role
Overview
As Asset Engineer (R&E) [Signalling] you will determine renewal requirements and develop allocated Signalling engineering renewal and enhancement requirements, produce specifications and acceptance criteria for Signalling engineering works to achieve the required scope and quality in accordance with company engineering policies, and manage the existing asset and obsolescence to keep the railway running in a tight funding environment.
Your Main Responsibilities will be to
- Inspect and prioritise renewal proposals for inclusion in the Signalling engineering work bank. Provide support to the production and prioritisation of the national business plan.
- Develop allocated renewal and enhancement schemes to meet Network Rail's goals prior to handover to delivery. Following handover, support the development and implementation of projects to confirm the renewal requirements are sufficient, correctly interpreted and any changes agreed. Check that completed schemes are appropriately assessed to determine they meet the project remit.
- Specify acceptance criteria for Signalling engineering works including design approval, acceptance of equipment and hand back to maintenance as appropriate. Audit acceptance processes are being discharged appropriately.
- Work with members of the other asset management teams to review renewal and enhancement proposals to optimise engineering activity across the railway infrastructure system and identify critical technical problems.
- Identify issues of national significance and elevate to the national team.
- Check that accurate and comprehensive records relating to the existence, configuration and modification history of Signalling engineering assets are maintained and that they accurately reflect their current 'as built' status.
- Participate in investigations of incidents relating to renewals where required.
- Carry out Engineering verification activities in support of the national programme.
- Carry out asset condition inspections that will inform the Signalling asset condition database and the renewals work bank.
- Support the ongoing management of obsolete assets and deferred renewals
- Develop level crossing renewals to support renewals requirements and safety enhancements
- Support other Route functions in management of assets where Signalling is a key stakeholder
Pay and Rewards
Salary: This role is a Band 4.C. £43,588 - £51,719 per annum .

This role requires working in the office or a least 60% of the working week. Base location could be any office location within Wales & Borders. Please note, there may be a requirement to travel to locations across the Route and for occasional night shift or night away from home / base location.

Your experience and skills
You will ideally have
- HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject
- Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
- Significant [Discipline] engineering experience, particularly related to renewals and enhancements
- Holds relevant professional licences and technical qualifications, or capable of achieving within reasonable timescales
- Knowledge of policy and standards relating to [Discipline] engineering
- Holds valid UK driving licence, or eligible and willing to obtain
- Able to work occasional night shift or stay overnight away from home / base location on occasion
- Keeping people safe on the railway is at the heart of everything we do. Safe behaviour is therefore a requirement of working for Network Rail. You should demonstrate your personal dedication to safety within your application.
What could set you apart
- Degree in a relevant subject
- Incorporated or Chartered Engineer
- An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
- Knowledge of investment processes and procedures, including relevant computer systems
- Knowledge of project management techniques
- Capability to create reporting dashboards in PowerBI or similar technology
