Job Title: DT Workshop Supervisor

Responsible to: Head of Design Technology

Hours of Work: 8:30am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday with occasional Saturdays. This post is term time only plus 6 weeks. In renumeration for Saturday working, the successful candidate would be given time off in lieu during the week, to be taken generally on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoon.

Salary: £27,455 p.a. (Point 3 on the St Peter's Support Pay Scale)

Overall Purpose of the Post

To support the work of the DT department in the supervising of workshop tasks being carried out by pupils which involve tools and machines primarily, as per our safe schemes of work. To provide help in the setting up of the classroom/workshop for activities and material requests/processing orders.

Key Roles

· To provide assistance and expertise during practical lessons; to help ensure that safe working practices are adhered to by pupils and that supervision is appropriate to the task. Help in setting up for lessons.

· Contribute to Departmental discussion and creation/review safe schemes of work, training programmes and risk assessments.

· To assist the DT Technician with preparation of materials to ensure a safe and smoothly running environment.

· To assist the DT Technician with the inspection and maintenance of machinery and tools and daily and longer-term maintenance and repairs (if needed); general upkeep; changing blades and belts etc.

· To ensure the general upkeep, tidiness and maintenance of the workshop and classroom areas.

· To oversee stock levels of materials, tools and consumables and to be responsible for reporting back and ordering as appropriate, including sourcing items.

· To construct items and prepare materials as requested by teaching staff, including display tasks.

To assist with the preparation of main project materials – fabric, timber, metal and plastics - as well as cutting to size materials for templates etc. This can include putting together ‘kits’ of disparate parts for projects.

· Liaising with the HoD and teaching staff to bring to attention any matters of importance.

· Liaising with the DT Technician and other support staff in resolving matters regarding the safe disposal of waste, recycling etc.

· To liaise with the IT department in getting IT issues resolved promptly.

· Photocopying, laminating etc. as required.

Daily

· Help in setting up the classroom and workshop ready for lessons.

· Assist the DT Technician with any safety checks as per our maintenance programme (CLEAPSS G254) – on workshop machines, including for eg. the emptying of sanding machine trays and cleaning of band-saw dust etc, as required.

· Ensure repairs are carried out/organised/or machines taken out of use promptly.

· Liaise with the DT Technician to check consumables and re-stock, keeping a general note of stock depletion and reordering promptly.

· Assist with the preparation of materials for projects as required. Photocopying and laminating as required.

· Ensure that the tools, machines and cables have been left in a safe condition after use.

· General tidying around machines to ensure all in good order for the following day.

Weekly

· Assist the DT Technician with safety checks as per our maintenance programme (CLEAPSS G254) – on workshop machines, including for e.g. the emptying of sanding machine trays and cleaning of band-saw dust etc., as required.

· Ensure repairs are carried out/organised/or machines taken out of use promptly.

Monthly/mid term

· Assist with the top up of project materials as required

· Assistance in display of pupils’ work (including photo displays).

Termly

· Assist the DT Technician to carry out safety checks as per our maintenance programme (CLEAPSS G254) on workshop machines, including for eg. the emptying of sanding machine trays and cleaning of band-saw dust, as required. Ensure repairs are carried out/organised/or machines taken out of use promptly.

· Clear down and tidy throughout, including disposal of debris.

· Check filter dates and address as necessary.

Annually

· Assist with stock take in preparation for summer orders – and subsequent unpacking, checking of deliveries.

· Assist with thorough clear down ready for summer cleaning.

· Assist DT Technician and teaching staff with preparation of materials for major projects including events such as the DT Exhibition, Competitions etc.

· Liaise with the DT Technician, regarding annual safety checking and servicing of machinery(currently under contract with Technology Supplies), and PAT testing, and ensuring recommendations have been carried out.
