Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Orthoptist to join a dynamic and highly motivated team of Orthoptists within ABUHB.

We are looking for a conscientious and adaptable individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

A Preceptorship Programme is in place for newly qualified Orthoptists.

The department is an accredited centre for both undergraduate and post-graduate Orthoptic students.

The team consists of 7 Orthoptists and 4 Orthoptic Clinical assistants.

Main duties of the job

To determine clinical diagnosis and develop effective specialist treatment plans in order to refer to ophthalmologist.

To participate in specialist multi-disciplinary clinics including paediatric ophthalmology, adult ocular motility, orthoptic and refraction.

To participate in secondary vision screening programme across all sites.

To assist in the teaching of orthoptic undergraduates on clinical placement and other healthcare professional including optometrists, school nurses , health visitors , junior doctors and medical students.

To undertake audit; and research and development.

As an autonomous practitioner to be legally and professionally responsible and accountable for the management of new and review patients referred to the orthoptic service; priorities own workload and keep accurate contemporaneous records.

To have responsibility to formulate relevant specialised management, treatment and discharge plans and make onward referrals to other members of the ophthalmic team.

To assess, diagnose and treat patients referred to the orthoptic service from other specialities including paediatrics, maxillofacial, neurology, urgent referral, A and E as well as referrals from ophthalmologists and optometrists; advise medical staff of the diagnosis and recommend management including onward referral.

To assist in the secondary orthoptic vision screening programme throughout ABUHB and identify children requiring onward referral.
