Sales & Estimating Manager – Structural Steelwork

Why This Role Matters

This role is a key leadership position within a structural steelwork contractor, combining both sales development and estimating responsibility. The successful Sales & Estimating Manager will play a critical role in driving business growth, securing new work, and overseeing the preparation of accurate and competitive tenders.

You will be responsible for managing client relationships, identifying new opportunities, and leading the estimating function to ensure high-quality, commercially sound bids across a range of structural steel projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the estimating function for structural steelwork projects
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and new clients
  • Identify and secure new business opportunities within target sectors
  • Oversee preparation of detailed cost estimates and tender submissions
  • Review drawings, specifications, and project documentation for tendering purposes
  • Ensure all bids are competitive, accurate, and commercially viable
  • Liaise with clients, main contractors, architects, and engineers throughout the bidding process
  • Negotiate tender submissions and commercial terms with clients
  • Manage and mentor estimating team members where required
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activity, and pricing conditions
  • Support pre-contract meetings, bid reviews, and post-tender negotiations
  • Work closely with project delivery teams to ensure smooth handover of secured projects
  • Identify risks, opportunities, and value engineering options within tenders
  • Maintain a strong pipeline of opportunities and update CRM/tender tracking systems

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Previous experience in estimating within structural steelwork or construction industry
  • Strong background in sales, business development, or commercial management
  • Excellent understanding of structural steel fabrication and erection processes
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
  • Strong commercial acumen and negotiation skills
  • Proven track record of winning and managing tenders
  • Strong leadership and team management ability
  • Excellent communication and client relationship skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and estimating systems
  • Industry network within structural steel or construction sector (desirable)
