Overall Purpose of The Job

The Chief of Staff, Office of the CTIO is a senior IT executive and acts as one of the CTIO’s most trusted strategic partners and part of their cross-functional leadership team. As effective ‘CTIO-by proxy’ and their ’right hand person’, the Chief of Staff is empowered to act on behalf of the CTIO in selected contexts and scenarios, extending the CTIO’s ability to lead across a broad and evolving agenda.

The Chief of Staff helps to drive clarity, consistency and coherence across the CTIO’s entire portfolio of accountabilities. They oversee a broad portfolio of cross-functional activities through their Office of the CTIO (OCTIO), touching all aspects of the IT operating model, for which they are responsible for the design and evolution of. From IT strategy and planning, to governance, performance management and communications, they translate intent into action, ensuring alignment with business strategy, goals and objectives, as well as operational discipline and follow-through. The OCTIO may also take on one-off initiatives or ad hoc activities, such as special projects, incubation of new capabilities or specific tasks requiring focused attention

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Ensuring rhythm, reliability and internal alignment within the IT organisation
  • Leading the internal cadence: managing leadership forums, performance reviews, planning cycles, governance processes and executive communication
  • Leading the modernisation and evolution of the IT function itself
  • Ensuring alignment between enterprise goals and IT’s long-term direction, through strategic IT planning
  • Evolving the IT operating model, shaping workforce strategy and building new internal capabilities
  • Taking ownership of emerging or transitional functions until they are ready to scale or transition into formal structures
  • Translating enterprise strategies into executable IT plans and delivery outcomes
  • Bridging the gap between business priorities and IT execution: aligning roadmaps, managing interdependencies and orchestrating delivery across organisational boundaries
  • Representing the CTIO in enterprise-level strategy and transformation efforts
  • Driving thought partnership, business model innovation and technology’s role in driving competitive advantage
  • Leading and developing the OCTIO team, providing direction, coordination and coaching across a group of cross-functional experts.
  • Acting as a delegate or proxy for the CTIO, representing the CTIO in executive forums or stepping in during the CIO’s absence when appropriate.

Essential

Education

  • Degree in business, engineering, IT or a related field, or equivalent work experience

Experience

  • Over 15 years of experience in IT
  • A minimum of seven years of experience of team management and leadership responsibilities
  • Wider experience, managing cross-functional teams or projects and influencing senior-level management and key stakeholders

Knowledge

  • Strong leadership capability with proven track record of successful team development and working effectively with all organisational levels
  • Expertise in budget planning, financial management and workforce management
  • Broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies and their strategic application to business needs, including the ability to differentiate between relevant trends and hype
  • Proven track record of innovation, both in internal problem solving and in fostering innovative uses of technology
  • Ability to improve operational efficiency, service delivery and information management across the IT organisation
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to explain technology solutions in business terms, establish rapport and persuade others
  • Ability to effectively drive business, culture and technology change in a dynamic and complex operating environment
  • Expert in IT strategic planning, IT governance formulation and organisational change management
  • Experience with organisational design and IT operating model development, including evolving roles, structures and delivery approaches to align with strategy
  • Understanding of enterprise transformation dynamics, including how to integrate IT strategy with business model change, ecosystem collaboration and enterprise-level change programmes
  • Strong customer and user experience focus
  • Ability to adapt to a wide range of activities without losing focus, in order to handle the diverse nature of tasks within the OCTIO effectively
