Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is delighted to offer a prestigious Endourology and Stone Surgery Fellowship at Queen Alexandra Hospital, one of the UK's highest-volume centres for complex stone disease.

This fellowship provides exceptional hands-on training in all aspects of modern endourology and is ideally suited to senior urology trainees and post-CCT fellows seeking advanced subspecialty expertise in stone surgery.

The Portsmouth Endourology Unit is nationally recognised for its innovative approach to stone disease management, high procedural volumes, and excellent patient outcomes. The unit is also a national leader in day-case stone surgery, we perform:

  • Over 100 PCNL procedures annually, both prone and supine approach.
  • More than 400 ureteroscopies each year
  • Day-case mini-PCNL and flexible ureteroscopy pathways
  • Comprehensive ESWL services with an on-site lithotripter
  • Advanced stone surgery including ECIRS and complex renal stone management
  • Over 100 HoLEP procedure annually

The unit has a strong reputation for training and offers fellows the opportunity to develop independence in complex endourological procedures within a structured and supportive environment.

Fellowship Training Opportunities

The successful candidate will follow a tailored training programme designed around their experience and career aspirations, with opportunities to gain expertise in:

  • Complex flexible ureteroscopy and laser stone surgery
  • Standard, mini and ultra-mini percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL)
  • Fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous renal access
  • Endoscopic Combined Intrarenal Surgery (ECIRS)
  • Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)
  • Advanced metabolic stone disease management
  • Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

By the end of the fellowship, candidates should be capable of independently managing complex stone disease and performing advanced endourological procedures.

Qualifications

Candidate Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • FRCS (Urol) or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in endourological surgery at registrar or equivalent level
  • A commitment to clinical excellence, research, teaching, and quality improvement
  • Qualifications that demonstrate proficiency in written and spoken English language

  • Prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Monitor developing situations and anticipate issues
  • Evidence of involvement in quality improvement projects, formal research project or other activity
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
