Balfour Beatty is delivering the civils package on the BBNP project, a major energy infrastructure scheme in the North of Scotland that plays a critical role in strengthening the UK’s electricity network and supporting long‑term energy resilience. This is a high‑profile project within Balfour Beatty’s energy portfolio, offering a stable and long‑term opportunity for civil engineering professionals who want to work on nationally significant infrastructure.
The scope of works includes the full range of enabling and permanent civil engineering activities required to support complex electrical installations. This covers bulk and detailed earthworks, reinforced concrete foundations and structures for major electrical assets, cable trenches and ducting, drainage infrastructure, and the construction of internal access roads, pavements, and hardstandings. The project also involves temporary works, site logistics, fencing and security infrastructure, and close coordination with electrical installation and commissioning teams to ensure safe and efficient delivery.

What you'll be doing
Role Purpose
- Undertake site engineering control and implementation of works on site, including monitoring and reporting progress.
- The project involves significant heavy civil engineering such as earthworks, drainage, and roads
Accountabilities
- Live the Balfour Beatty Values
- Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm
- Support the delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities
Health, Safety & Environmental
- Produce Task Briefing Sheets
- Contribute to production of Permit to Dig, including briefing to the workforce
- Carry out briefings and toolbox talks
- Conduct Safety Inspections
- Identify hazards and contribute to developing Safe Systems of Work
Engineering Control
- Set out from primary control provided by others
- Provide sketches detailing the setting out information installed
- Maintain survey equipment, including registers and testing regimes
- Read and determine information from drawings, schedules, and specifications
Quality
- Produce as-built drawings and records for every element of the works involved
- Complete Quality Check Sheets and produce information for Handover Documentation in line with programme
- Maintain accurate records – Daily Diary, photographs, records of site discussions
Productivity
- Measure actual materials used and reconcile with theoretical measures, reporting and investigating reasons for differences
- Work to Weekly Programme (drafted by others) and mark up progress achieved weekly
- Contribute to collection of data for Key Performance Indicators, including reasons for difference
Commercial
- Produce accurate daily diary of resources, including labour, plant, materials, subcontractors, and outputs
- Produce weekly measure, take-offs, and schedule materials accurately, producing clear requisitions and following through to delivery
- Understand what is classified as additional work and how to record this
- Be familiar with actual resourcing levels versus budget and report reasons for differences

Engineering Control
- Use setting out techniques and survey equipment
- Report issues with control and information provided
Quality
- Read and understand drawings and schedules
- Understand Activity Control Plans and produce resultant information for handover file
- Have a strong understanding of construction tolerances
- Be aware of and use Specification and other Contract documents
- Produce detailed documentation for handover of completed works
Productivity
- Take off and schedule material quantities accurately
Commercial
- Have knowledge of specification and contract documents
- Understand what constitutes additional works
Desirable
- Developing leadership skills
- Targeting and actively progressing professional accreditation (e.g., ICE, IHT)
- EUSR Cat 1 & 2 Training
