Attorney – Veterans Unit

Location: Options – Bangor office; Hybrid remote

Pine Tree Legal Assistance has an immediate opening for a full-time attorney in its Veterans Unit. The Veterans Unit Staff Attorney will be based in Bangor, Maine. The attorney will handle a wide variety of cases for Maine veterans, providing veterans with civil legal services ranging from triage and consultations to full legal representation. Working within a team, the attorney will be expected to aid in the prevention of homelessness and health‐harming social conditions such as evictions, consumer issues, pending loss of social benefits, etc. This will be accomplished by detecting legal issues that have a negative impact on Veterans’ housing and providing legal assistance to avoid such outcomes.

As a general litigator, the attorney will appear in court on a regular basis to provide representation in consumer, landlord/tenant, and benefits cases (including income benefits). The attorney will also provide administrative advocacy on a range of civil legal needs, including

advocacy before the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. As resources permit and the needs of the Veteran client community require, the attorney may also handle litigation in other areas of law. While the typical caseload is handled at the State District Court level, the attorney may handle administrative appeals to the Maine Superior Court and Maine Supreme Judicial Court, as well as appeals to the Board of Appeals for Veteran Claims. Some cases will present with more complex issues that could require significant time, while others may be resolved in summary proceedings and can be completed with 5 – 10 hours of legal work.

The attorney will also perform community engagement with VA clinical and administrative staff and with various state and private veteran service organizations. This community engagement will focus on assisting VA clinical and administrative staff and veteran service

organization staff with properly identifying

housing and health-harming civil legal needs for timely

referrals. In addition to conducting outreach to existing partners, the attorney will be asked to establish new relationships in areas across the state that historically have provided fewer referrals. The attorney is also expected to be a supportive colleague to other members of the unit and to the program as a whole.

The attorney must be admitted to the practice of law in Maine, or be eligible for licensure with the Maine Bar and able to practice under MRCP 11 (c) while working at Pine Tree. Previous litigation experience is preferred. Applicant must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the state of Maine. This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
