Job Purpose
To be a proactive member of the Production Studios Lighting Team; working with the Lighting Technician, Electricians and Lighting Directors in the operation and maintenance of lighting systems and equipment, both in the studio and out on location.
The Associate Lighting Programmer will work closely with the Lighting Director, Lighting Technician and Electricians to achieve the desired lighting effects in the studios. As the Lighting Operator, you will be responsible for the programming, maintenance, and operation of the lighting console during both pre-recorded and live productions as well on live events, ensuring a seamless execution of lighting designs that enhance the visual quality of our broadcasts.
What You’ll Do
Sky Production Services provide production services for all of Sky’s Content Creation teams - Sport, Sports News, Creative & Entertainment; we also provide our services to Independent Production Houses. We have over 700 accomplished people who make sure that our customers have an incredible content experience; from the pictures they see to the sound they hear.
The department is made up of two main areas: Production Studios and Post- Production. These areas encompass all the operational crafts and disciplines associated with programme making such as Cameras, Lighting, Sound, Graphics, Editing and Audio Mixing to mention just a few. These teams of specialists can work across a variety of programmes from News to Sport to Observational Entertainment to Live Audience Entertainment shows, in our innovative studio facilities, on location or at one of our many Outside Broadcast events.

Job Purpose

The Associate Lighting Programmer will work closely with the Lighting Director, Lighting Technician and Electricians to achieve the desired lighting effects in the studios. As the Lighting Operator, you will be responsible for the programming, maintenance, and operation of the lighting console during both pre-recorded and live productions as well on live events, ensuring a seamless execution of lighting designs that enhance the visual quality of our broadcasts.
What You’ll Do
- Collaborate with the Lighting Director, Lighting Technician and Electricians to understand the lighting requirements for each production and create lighting designs that align with the overall vision.
- Program, cue, and operate the lighting console to control and adjust the intensity, colour and positioning of lighting during live broadcasts.
- Advising others on interactions between systems and expected results of changes to systems across multiple shows, studios, galleries and operating desks.
- Assist with the safe operation, hanging and/or installation of lighting equipment including conventional lights, moving lights, work lights, back up lighting and dimmer systems.
- To be an active member of the Lighting team on our productions - setting, balancing studio/location lighting individually from a prepared plot or under direction.
- To take ownership of Lighting equipment and control system failures or issues in the working environment and if necessary, raise to relevant parties in a timely fashion, reporting their outcomes to the Team Leaders.
- Strive for high levels of delivery, best process, and Sky behaviours in all operational work. Be flexible, positive and curious with the ability to embrace change and juggle a broad workload.

- Relevant qualification and work experience programming and operating lighting consoles preferably, but not exclusively, in a broadcast Studio environment.
- In-depth knowledge of ETC lighting consoles including the ability to program lighting schemes based on direction and Production needs.
- Knowledge of industry standard lighting instruments and network connectivity, calculating fixture numbers, DMX channels, IP addresses etc. to ensure full control of individual heads, or groups of heads, including cue timings and saving for recall as required.
- Proficient in programming moving lights, conventional lights, and LED lights for live broadcast productions and events.
- Positive, proactive Associate Lighting Programmer, who works well in a team and is eager to learn and develop a career in Broadcast Television.
- Can work well and communicate effectively with team, clients and talent when under pressure, delivering the right result for the production and the department.
- A strong work ethic and a willingness to get involved in all aspects of the business when necessary.
- Well informed and up to date on industry developments and production processes.
- Able to meet individual goals, and as part of a collaborative team.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic; able to prioritise a sophisticated workload and to take on responsibility with minimal supervision.
