The Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) is an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs, and works on behalf of the Scottish Government and Welsh Government. The aim of this role is to manage a core APHA production facility supplying mammalian and avian cell cultures, monoclonal antibodies and their related products, to APHA and commercial customers.

Degree in science subject, or suitable career experience.
Ways of working
The post is full-time, we may consider two part-time staff on a job-share basis if continuity can be arranged. The role is based at Weybridge where the team is located and due to the nature of the role and duties required. Travel may be required to various different locations around the country for example for training courses and meetings. Flexibility in working hours is required if called upon to finish a particular urgent task or call upon in an event of an outbreak. Out of hours work may be required in the event of an incident.
Staff are required to work rostered on-call duties, weekends, Bank Holidays and occasional evenings. APHA Management reserves the right to change overtime patterns to meet requirements. You may be eligible for overtime payments and where overtime is approved you will receive appropriate payment.
Defra continues to support a blended working model and successful candidates are expected to work from one of the office locations listed in this advert in order to connect with their colleagues, as required by their role and business team needs. Defra’s current policy is that no more than 40% of the working week should be spent at home, averaged over a month unless exceptional circumstances apply and/or the post-holder is a contractual home worker. However, this particular role requires the post holder to work in the lab 100% of the time.
The successful candidate will need to comply with a number of health protocols and wear protective clothing and Respiratory Personal Protective Equipment (RPPE) as required. The work of the post can be physically demanding.
Due to access requirements to biosecure areas, individuals must be physically able.
Depending on the areas of work involved you will be expected to have any necessary vaccinations or health surveillance. This will be arranged by the Health Team, Weybridge. It may also be necessary to undergo a pre-employment medical assessment.
A valid full driving licence is necessary or access to an alternative means of transport.

The Weybridge site is a strategically important national asset due to its role as a reference laboratory supporting the Government’s response to national emergencies including disease outbreaks. For this reason, all postholders based on the APHA Weybridge site must hold a valid Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) security clearance or above. It is up to each person applying for a post at APHA Weybridge to ensure they meet the residency criteria. - Responsible for the production and quality control of antibody products for commercial sale.
- Be proactive in liaising and collaborating with key stakeholders, including Defra policy, APHA regulatory authorities, Manufacturers, suppliers, senior management, APHA contracts, APHA Safety, Health, and Wellbeing Dept. (SHaW), Facilities Management, and external contractors.
- To manage production of reagents using Integra stock management system.
- Liaise closely with staff in Finance, PSUR and Sales desk to ensure any queries or problems are dealt with effectively.
- Cultivate and maintain expert network in the cell culture area – APHA Virology and Pirbright Institute.
- Investigate new technologies to reduce use of animals in the preparation of primary cells.
- Ensure accreditation and compliance to ISO 9001 and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
- Provide professional advice to APHA commercial and external customers.
- Maintain the main APHA reference storage facility for cell lines and hybridomas and their back-up at The European Collection of Authenticated Cell Cultures (ECACC).

Internal Fraud Database Check
Applicants who are successful at interview will be, as part of pre-employment screening subject to a check on the Internal Fraud Database (IFD). This check will provide information about employees who have been dismissed for fraud or dishonesty offences. This check also applies to employees who resign or otherwise leave before being dismissed for fraud or dishonesty had their employment continued. Any applicant’s details held on the IFD will be refused employment.
A candidate is not eligible to apply for a role within the Civil Service if the application is made within a 5-year period following a dismissal for carrying out internal fraud against government.
