Job Summary

The post holder will identify opportunities to build bigger creative campaign moments from news through strategic planning. Working with targeted audience insight and an understanding of the operational space to shape creative campaign planning and give guidance to deliver more effective story telling.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Part time roles may be considered above 30 hours per week.

Job Description

With an instantly recognisable brand, Royal Navy Communications and Influence (RN Comms) is charged with protecting and improving the reputation of the Royal Navy (RN). Through a well-developed comms strategy, the 40-strong team work together to protect and increase levels of favourability and understanding amongst the RN’s target audiences. This is achieved via:

  • Planning and Evaluation. Developing essential messaging and communications plans to ensure coherent communications across all channels, which are underpinned by ongoing evaluation.
  • Content Creation. Creating impactful and engaging communications content and governing current owned channels and digital transformation.
  • Campaigns. Driving proactive storytelling about the successes of and future ambitions of the RN both internally and externally.
  • Reputation. Protecting the RN reputation and brand across all proactive outputs and reactive media queries.

Our outputs form a coordinated process which starts with planning and is underpinned by Insight, Data, Evaluation and Analysis (IDEA) in order to deliver effective creative communication campaigns to a variety of audiences.

RN Comms, in line with the rest of HM Government, is expected to adopt the Government Communications Service (GCS) Modern Communications Operating Model (MCOM) with proactive communications (where possible and appropriate) delivered on a campaign basis, using the OASIS framework.

Role Breakdown:

  • Work with Creative Campaigns Team Lead to establish and agree campaign requirements.
  • Follow OASIS to confirm campaign objective, audience target, then develop campaign idea, plan implementation activities and agree evaluation criteria.
    • Help to identify creative out-of-the-box opportunities to reach audiences who aren’t already engaged with the Royal Navy
    • Work with Campaigns C1 Team Lead to identify case studies and people and activity of note in the organisation that help to deliver against campaign objective
    • Help to lead creative brainstorming sessions to tap into the wealth of experience within the team – military and civilian, while ensuring the key RN messages can be delivered effectively with the target audiences. Use both public sector and private sector best practice to energise the team.
  • Produce creative brief that will guide the subsequent content generation.
  • Assess the quality and creativity of the content generated based on the creative brief agreed, and provide guidance to enable the Content Generators to develop content that will meet or exceed the audience’s expectations.
  • Deliver campaign activity to a high standard. Contribute to evidence-based strategy and continuous review and reflect on outcomes.

  • Work with the planning team to collate desk-based research based on a specific brief from the Campaigns C1. This may involve researching into a specific audience segment, emerging communications platforms, key trends and influencers and other relevant areas
  • Assist with research projects as required to gain further knowledge on effective communications techniques

This post carries responsibility to be part of the RN Comms on-call duty roster.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
