How many characters is this. Do you want to be a part of getting permanent, decent homes built for some of the 3,000 children and families suffering homelessness in Brighton and Hove? That’s what Mission HOME is fighting for.
What difference will you make?
You will drive Mission HOME’s fight against homelessness in Brighton by advising on planning rules, identifying microsites, and engaging the Council. Their expertise could secure land for homes, housing dozens of families and setting a UK precedent. By tackling systemic housing barriers, they’ll improve health and stability for 3,000 vulnerable families.
What are we looking for?
The Volunteer Town Planning Advisor for Mission HOME needs professional experience in town planning, with knowledge of UK planning laws and land use policies as well as the planning landscape in Brighton and Hove. They must have strong communication skills for email, phone, and in-person council interactions. Being highly organized and proactive is essential to research microsites and meet campaign deadlines effectively.
What will you be doing?
I’m Scarlett Chapman, 14, and I started this because it breaks my heart to see families stuck in often cramped, awful temporary accommodation - sometimes for up to 15 years. I’ve been busking in the local area since I was 8, raising over £10,000 for local homelessness charities and helping spread awareness through regular press, TV, and radio coverage. We’re asking Brighton and Hove City Council to use their small, unused patches of land - microsites - to build council homes on. You could play a big role in this! Join our close-knit team of volunteers and help us convince the Council to free up land for homes, giving families a real shot at a better life. Check out my YouTube video (https //youtu.be/jXhxc-8D9TY) - then read on to see how you can pitch in! “I’ve met families living like this, and one mum, ‘Julie,’ told me they were given a place so bad they had to hoover mould off the bedroom walls. Her little girl kept getting lung infections - it shook me. That’s why we’re doing this.” – Scarlett Your Role Help steer our campaign by advising on local planning regulations and the type of sites which would suit for small housing developments. Identify potential sites. Interact with the Planning and Estates departments at the council when it comes to discussing sites which they might make available. Skills Needed Experience as a Town Planner Excellent communication skills (email, phone, in-person). Organised and proactive. Support & Details Flexible, spare-time role with full briefing. Team support via online/in-person meetings. Unpaid; expenses reimbursed. Use your own equipment.
