Job Description

The Service

We are recruiting for a professionally qualified archivist to work as part of the Archives and Cornish Studies team based at Kresen Kernow ( Kresen Kernow – A home for Cornwall's archives ), the archive centre for Cornwall. The collection includes the usual range of local authority archives, dating from the 12 th century to the present day, as well as an extensive Cornish studies library.

The Role

The archivist role includes a wide range of professional duties, from responding to customer enquiries, oversight of the reading room and strongroom security, to dealing with depositors, accessioning and cataloguing, and supporting our outreach programmes. The archivists work closely with other colleagues in the front-facing public service, as part of a small, friendly and highly motivated team.

This is a public and customer-facing role, where the statutory English language requirement for public sector workers applies.

This position will be subject to a standard criminal record disclosure check.

Working Pattern

The role is 0.6 FTE (22.2 hours per week) and requires the ability to work mainly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (the days Kresen Kernow is open to the public), along with some regular Saturdays (with time off in lieu for Saturdays).

What You’ll Need To Succeed

The successful candidate must have a specialist degree in archives and records (or an equivalent heritage or information sector qualification), with the ability to catalogue to ISAD(G) standards using archival cataloguing software, specifically CALM; excellent communication, organisational and interpersonal skills; good competence in IT and the ability to meet deadlines.

  • The Archivist role includes responding to customer enquiries received by email and in person, supporting wider Kresen Kernow services and processing accessions to make them available to the public. Please give an example of when you’ve had to manage several work-strands simultaneously, how did you ensure everything was completed in a timely manner?
  • The Kresen Kernow collection includes maps, volumes, letters, photographs, glass negatives and digital records, along with other formats. We are here to provide access to these collections. From your experience, what are the issues around finding, producing and facilitating access to items like this for use by customers?
  • Please give an example of when you’ve had to use different communication methods to share information with different people and ensure everyone received the relevant data. Explain how your approach was successful.
