About the role
Balfour Beatty has a fantastic opportunity for a highly competent Head of Commercial Services to join their rapidly expanding Power Transmission and Distribution business. The role will be based from our office in Motherwell with hybrid working options.The role will be responsible for ensuring adherence to the business’s commercial expectations and governance procedures both internally and throughout the wider supply-chain as well as incorporate commercial audit, training and upskilling. The individual will also be responsible for the correct administration of the main contract ensuring compliance and consistency across the wider team and also lead the team responsible for change control, working closing with project controls
The individual will be an experienced professional, who has previously worked on operational project delivery, and contract negotiations, including the development of internal joint ventures and assembly of specialist supply chain partners in complex and high value construction, building services and infrastructure projects.
They would need to demonstrate a high-level understanding of NEC forms of contract and have demonstrable experience in contract drafting, negotiation and execution of related commercial aspects

What you'll be doing
Commercial Management
Looking at the bigger picture and prioritising business opportunities.- Deputising for the Project Commercial Director when required.
- Reviewing contract / sub-contracts and provide advice in line with company policies.
- Liaise with JV partners on all commercial/ contractual matters.
- Understanding dispute resolution and how to avoid it through proactive management of the contract.
- Be proactive in ensuring ‘lessons learned’ from previous projects are flagged, mitigated or de-risked through contract negotiations.
- Arrange for Contracts / Sub-contracts to be executed in accordance with the Delegated Levels of Authority and Group redlines.
- Understanding the application of legislation.
- Liaising with in-house legal experts where required to support the project
- Preparation / review of contract document including the interpretation of specifications & preambles.
- Management and reporting of commercial risk and opportunity.
- Management of the contract administration and change control process.
- Support the management of disallowed cost.
- To be able to report and explain the commercial aspects to senior staff.
Governance
- Ensuring the team adheres to the Company’s governance requirements and seeks to maximise LEAN/digital opportunities.
Development, Recruitment and Retention
- Recruitment, management, development and retention of staff.
Who we're looking for
The candidate will be an experienced individual who has significant infrastructure or construction industry experience. They will have a track record of managing and developing a commercial team and will mentor/role model to other commercial staff on their journey to becoming professionally qualified. BSc or MSc in Quantity Surveying and/or LLB/LLM or significant equivalent experience and ideally be a Chartered Member of the RICS, ICES or CIOB. They will have proven skills in commercial awareness, client liaison, project management and team leadership. They will also have an extensive understanding of negotiation and agreement of FEED, Professional Services Agreements, Alliance Agreements, Joint Venture Agreements and complex, high value engineering and construction contracts, particularly NEC contracts.
