Job Overview

Tes is supporting the appointment of a Deputy Head of Pastoral Care&Boarding to join a School based in Shanghai.

Job Summary

The School is seeking a compassionate, strategic, and student-centered leader to serve as Head of Pastoral Care & Boarding. This is a key leadership role responsible for shaping and sustaining a positive school culture, promoting student well-being, and overseeing the school’s boarding and pastoral systems. The successful candidate will foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for all students and ensure excellence in care and guidance across both day and boarding settings.

Key Responsibilities

The Role

  • Develop and lead the school pastoral care system, setting and maintaining high standards for student well-being, behavior, and personal development.
  • Oversee the boarding program, ensuring a safe, structured, and supportive environment that meets the holistic needs of residential students.
  • Monitor and support student attendance, behavior, and personal development through consistent tracking, timely intervention, and close collaboration with staff and families.
  • Coordinate the school’s safeguarding framework and child protection procedures, ensuring staff are well-trained and policies are consistently applied.
  • Collaborate with academic, operational, and administrative teams to ensure effective communication and smooth day-to-day operations.

Leadership Role

  • Supervise and support Housemasters (including tutors and liaison officers), the ECA Manager–Housekeeping team, and the Youth League–Student Union staff to ensure consistent and high-quality provision of care and student engagement.
  • Lead the implementation and development of the House System to promote school spirit, student leadership, and inter-house collaboration.
  • Support and guide the work of the Student Union and Youth League Branch, encouraging student voice, leadership, and participation.
  • Build and lead a high-performing pastoral and boarding team through coaching, performance management, and professional development initiatives.

Others

  • Undertake relative assignments as directed by the School Head.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree or above with a B.Ed/M.Ed/MA in Education, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in education, with at least 5 years in a leadership role focused on pastoral care and boarding in international or bilingual school settings.
  • Hold a recognized teacher qualification and leadership qualification such as NPQH (National Professional Qualification for Headship) or an equivalent certification.
  • Deep understanding of safeguarding, child protection, and student well-being practices, with a proven ability to uphold policies and implement effective systems.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust and collaboration among students, staff, and families.
  • Demonstrated success in developing and managing pastoral care and boarding programs that support holistic student development and contribute to a strong school culture.
