Freight Team Manager
Convelio

Who Are We?
Convelio is a licensed freight forwarding startup evolving at the intersection of Tech, Logistics and the Art World. The startup specialises in the global shipping & storage of high-end goods: paintings, sculptures, basically any valuable or bulky merchandise, alongside market leading SaaS technology to solve the problems that Registrars and Art Operations professionals face today.
Our mission is to become a tech-driven company in a traditional industry, and therefore make the shipping & storage of bulky and valuable items as easy as possible by providing an online and seamless experience.
We currently serve a wide range of customers from art galleries, antique dealers, auction houses, online platforms to interior designers.
Your Role:
As the Team Manager at Convelio UK of our Freight department, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of art logistics. You will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of our freight department, ensuring that all shipments are managed efficiently and in line with our high standards for customer care, and keeping an eye out to find quick solutions to all sorts of issues. It is a fast-paced role that fits high energy and agile people who like challenges.
This role is based five days a week in our warehouse in West Drayton, and reports to the General Manager in the UK. You will be managing a team of around eight, whose main daily activities include checking documents, booking couriers and other forms of transport including air cargo and sea freight, and overseeing delivery of our shipments to the final destination of our clients.
What you'll do:
- Manage our team of around eight Freight Coordinators, ensuring that their work is completed efficiently and to a high standard, and that workload is balanced across the team. To do this, you’ll need to learn to build and manage reports in Salesforce to track the shipments of your team.
- Be “hands on” in ensuring that all our shipments reach their destination quickly and safely, which includes being able to step in with the team when a shipment is complex or has an incident. You’ll also need to coordinate well with other teams, especially our warehouse and customer care teams in order to resolve any issues.
- Act as a knowledge expert in the different types of freight which we organise: courier, air cargo, sea freight and truck transport. Manage the supplier relationships in these different areas including with our white glove partners and customs agents globally.
- Drive high performance, measuring KPIs on a regular basis and putting in place action plans to ensure that we are continuously improving our processes.
- Work to streamline processes to make your team work more efficiently, and especially to collaborate with other freight teams at Convelio to standardise processes across the company. This may include leading projects such as reducing the team’s reliance on paper files in the office.
- Coach and mentor our Freight team, offering guidance and training to help them develop in building their careers at Convelio, and ensuring that they have the skills and resources necessary to perform at their best. This will include conducting regular performance reviews, providing feedback and identifying opportunities for professional development.
- Foster a positive work environment that aligns with Convelio’s values and culture, in particular building connections between your team and the wider team at Convelio both in the UK and globally.
Your profile:
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in freight forwarding, customs, or international logistics, with at least 2 years in a management role.
- Preferred but not required: experience in fine art shipping and knowledge of art-specific customs such as Temporary Admission and Bond
- Experience in working across different methods of freight, with a track record of problem solving across courier, air cargo and sea freight transport methods. Experience in working directly with airlines and cutting AWBs is a requirement of the role, as well as a good knowledge of UK Export customs.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills in English, and experience working directly with clients. If you have experience working with VIP/luxury clients, that is an added bonus.
- You are well organised and disciplined in daily activity planning and know how best to prioritise
- You are an excellent learner with a desire to adapt to new concepts and technologies. In particular, you have good computer skills and can adapt to different systems.
- Good analytical skills, and experience in setting KPIs for your team to improve performance and growth.
- You are enthusiastic, ambitious, self-motivated and hands-on with a strong work ethic
