We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and well-motivated Registered Biomedical Scientist (Band 5) who are looking for permanent posts to complement the Bacteriology Department within Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services. The laboratory is currently developed with a Kiestra system, MALDITOF and PCR techniques. Applications are invited from HCPC registered BMS staff.
You will work in rotation with other staff in all sections of the laboratory. You must be keen to embrace new ways of working and develop your knowledge and skills. You will be expected to participate in the full shift rota, covering early and late shifts, weekends and on call duties during the week. Our busy laboratory is fully accredited with UKAS 15189 and HCPC training status.
You will be expected to work according to our working time compliant shift system and may be required to work at other network sites such as Wexham Park to maintain quality, training and service requirements.
Main duties of the job
Under supervision, perform diagnostic microbiology investigations on a wide range of clinical specimens to support patient care and treatment. Duties include the preparation, processing, and analysis of samples such as blood, cerebrospinal fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, tissue, and other bodily fluids or secretions. You will be responsible for detecting and identifying bacterial, fungal, and parasitic pathogens using both manual and automated techniques. This includes working with culture plates, microscopy, and advanced laboratory analysers, in conjunction with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), to ensure accurate and timely reporting of results. The role involves developing interpretive skills to assess and act on laboratory findings under the guidance of senior staff. You will contribute to the delivery of a safe, efficient, and high-quality microbiology service, ensuring compliance with laboratory protocols and quality standards. Collaboration with clinical and laboratory colleagues is essential to support effective diagnosis and treatment decisions.

- BSc Biomedical Science or equivalent
- IBMS Certificate of Competence willing to undergo relevant training to ensure sound relevant knowledge
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science
