Newport City Council Legal Services has an excellent opportunity for a motivated and organised Assistant Solicitor. The postholder will be a Qualified solicitor/barrister or equivalent.
Positive and committed to providing a high quality service, you will be able to show initiative and attention to detail as you will be responsible for running a caseload of Planning and Property cases.
Local government legal work is varied and whilst at times it can be challenging, it is also frequently rewarding. There will be times when you need to work under pressure and balance conflicting priorities, however, you will be supported in doing this. You will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to your own development and a willingness to undertake training and develop new skills as required.
Responsibilities
- Effectively manage a caseload comprising a range of planning and property matters across a variety of areas of law, including planning, highways, rights of way and property.
- Provide legal advice and support to Council committees, including the Planning Committee, and to attend Council and committee meetings as required.
- Provide prompt, effective and user-friendly legal advice to a range of Council service areas and organisations associated with the Council (e.g. schools), particularly in relation to planning, highways and property.
- Be an advocate in Planning Inquiries on behalf of the Council and other clients where appropriate.
- Negotiate on behalf of the Council and draft appropriate legal documentation.
Qualifications
- A solicitor, barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives qualified to practise in England and Wales.
- Knowledge of some or all of the following areas of law: Planning Law, Highways Law, Countryside legislation, Rights of Way procedures and legislation, Property law, Housing law, Environmental law, Planning enforcement.
- Experience of managing a varied caseload of planning, highways and property law.
