The role is to evaluate internal and external software requirements in relation to a business domain or model and create a best-in-class solution that meets the requirements, whilst keeping all stakeholders involved throughout the process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project initiation – establish and understand the existing problem or new business requirement and create a visualisation of the requirements where possible to determine whether the project should be funded. Ensure all stakeholders are involved to gain comprehensive information and understanding of the requirements.
  • Customer visits. To enable provision of excellent solutions. Business Analysts will be required to travel to customer sites to better understand their problems and products use case.
  • Business Analysts will also be involved in demonstration of prototype and product to ensure accurate solution and specification. User input is seen as critical to developing user engagement through exceptional UI.
  • Strive to understand the principles and terminologies that you come across, especially when entering a new business domain.
  • Evaluate the business needs, make sense of the available information and ensure that project teams understand all the details they require.
  • Collaborate with numerous stakeholders within the company and to ensure that their concerns, requirements, and contribution are included in the requirements specification document.
  • Preparing the project charters to ensure the management can make investment decisions.
  • Once the requirements specification document is passed on to Engineers for development, you may still be called upon to provide clarity to Engineers, negotiate with stakeholders on conflicting requirements, etc. This may include holding meetings to deliberate on solving specific problems, identify risks and manage technology-related restrictions.
  • The responsibility of the business analyst is to collaborate with other players in the business to establish what the requirements are and to ensure everyone within the project understands them. Also, you should facilitate communication and knowledge sharing to ensure clients’ needs are met effectively.
  • Carry out comprehensive research in order to understand business needs. This may involve researching their competitors, deliberating with subject matter experts, carrying out document analysis, and developing prototypes.
  • Once business requirements have been elicited, the BA should organise them into a formal and written document which can be shared with all stakeholders. To execute this process effectively, the BA should have the expertise to present the final results of the analysis in an accurate, clear and understandable manner.
  • Engineering will be presented with the specification document after the relevant stakeholders have approved it, though it’s always helpful to carry them along from the onset of the project. Engineers should have the opportunity to ask questions for clarity
  • Business analysts may or may not be involved in testing the final product, depending on whether software testers have been employed to carry out the tests or not. The outcome of the tests, will determine whether the product is ready to be put to live or not.
