Job Overview

We are looking to appoint consultants in anaesthetics with an interest in:

  • General anaesthesia with a specialist interest in paediatric anaesthesia.
  • Management and the delivery of paediatric anaesthetic services.
  • Teaching

The jobs are full-time posts comprising 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). 7.5PA will be dedicated to anaesthetic sessions. The post holder is expected to undertake general on call duties.1 PA is allocated to this commitment. The remaining 1.5PA will be allocated to supporting professional activities (SPA).

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

The post has arisen to meet the demand driven by the expansion of theatre activity and retirements.

Job Planning:

The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement between the appointee and the Chief of Service, that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives. Changes having budgetary or contractual implications would also need the agreement of the Chief Executive.

One half day per month is dedicated to audit and teaching during which time all routine work is suspended. All staff are expected to attend except for those providing emergency care cover and those on leave. The directorate meeting is also held at this time. It is assumed that every member of the department will play a full part in formal and informal teaching of medical and other staff, and this is recognized as part of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).

CPD/ Study Leave:

All members of the Department are encouraged to take study leave and will be expected to undertake CME in line with the Royal College of Anaesthetists CPD requirements.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • Listed on GMC UK Specialist Register (UKSR) or within 6 months of gaining CCT in Anaesthesia at the date of the interview

Desirable criteria

  • MRCP or similar qualification
  • Postgraduate qualification in perioperative medicine
  • Qualification in regional anaesthesia

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Able to evaluate own clinical practice
  • Able to demonstrate innovative thinking
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to organise and develop service provision
  • Management: understanding the structures of NHS hospitals and willing to play a role in the Department and in the Hospital

Desirable criteria

  • Good IT skills
  • Experience in Management
  • Experience in conducting high-risk anaesthetic clinic

Skills and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Experience in the management of a paediatric anaesthesia service.
  • Specialist training in paediatric anaesthesia
  • A wide grounding during training of all aspects of anaesthesia
  • Provider status in PALS, ATLS and ALS (or equivalent
  • Willingness to teach undergraduate and post graduates particularly, in the weekly protected trainee teaching sessions
  • Understand principles and participated in audit activity
  • Understand the principles of Clinical Governance and demonstrate experience of evidence based practice

Desirable criteria

  • Faculty in teaching courses
  • Postgraduate qualification in teaching
  • Relevant research
