This is an exciting opportunity to join the HMS SULTAN Physical Development Team. The Physical Development (PDev) portfolio is a key component of Armed Forces operational capability, and comprises three pillars: Sport, Physical Education and Adventurous Training. PDev offers a vital contribution in that it helps develop fitness, teamwork, leadership, self-discipline, determination, co-ordination, courage, individual and collective resilience, and consequently morale and fighting spirit. PDev also plays a meaningful part in Service life overall and is a core activity that provides a balance for the stresses of military life.

Job Description

RN Physical Development programmes contribute significantly to the development and sustainment of the Moral Component of Operational Capability by delivering individuals who are mentally and physically robust with a high degree of war-fighting spirit; they also make a substantial contribution to the maintenance of high morale. This is inextricably linked to operational efficiency; authorised PDev is a condition of service with duty status and is a core activity that cannot be considered discretionary.

In support of the Live Well strategy, the SDO is key to the facilitation, administration and delivery of PDev to establishment personnel. They provide support and advice to establishment sports teams, facilitate fitness training and testing, adventurous activities and have a close working relationship with the People Support Sports Delivery Teams, the Deployable Regional Unit and broader RN Sports Associations.  A key delivery objective is to provide opportunities for participation in PDev at all levels across the establishment.

The SDO will be the conduit to providing grassroots opportunities and thus supporting the RN SDO continuum at all levels and assist in delivery of regional events and NAVYFit festivals at their establishments (necessitating carriage of equipment and stores between sites). MT is available for use to holders of full UK driving licence with appropriate licence categories to include use of minibuses.

Person specification

The Ideal Candidate Will Be Expected To:

Have a keen interest in sport and fitness training.

  • Have experience in the fitness sector and have been involved in sport management.
  • Show confidence in the delivery of PDev and be able to motivate and coach to get the best out of their personnel.
  • Have good organisational skills, be self-motivated and work well as part of a team.
  • Line manage junior staff and as such be good leaders in their own right.

There is an office element to this role and they should therefore be articulate and have good written and IT skills.

Licences

Full UK Driving Licence to include category B1.

Qualifications

It is Essential that candidates have:

  • Level 2 First Aid or equivalent
  • Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) Level 2 in gym instructing for circuit training delivery or equivalent evidence of skills and experience through other means.

Communicating and influencing - With the management of a team effective communication is an important ability to enable safe delivery of both training as well as supporting team members and Line Management alike. The candidate must be able to express how they have effectively communicated in previous roles.

Full UK Driving Licence to include category B1- Driving vehicles with trainees to different sporting activities.

An apprenticeship is a combined package of work and training. Professional qualifications can be achieved through an apprenticeship and range from Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSEs), Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A Levels), and Levels 4 -7, which can give you a foundation degree, a full Bachelor’s degree, or a Master’s degree. 

Apprenticeships normally last between 12 months - 3 years, depending on the level of the apprenticeship.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working.
