As part of our Major Projects division, you will be working directly on the project based in Derby, responsible for pricing tender opportunities by implementing estimating strategies on each bid. You will also establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with customers, partners and bid teams.


What you'll be doing


As a Senior Estimator you will:

  • Lead the project estimating team, including managing the workload and allocation of estimating resource within assigned bid / project team.
  • High level appraisal of customer requirements against budget.
  • Support the development of the bid budget and Input into pre-qualification process.
  • Develop the estimating strategy document as part of the overarching pre-construction plan.
  • Input into the commercial and negotiation strategy.
  • Analysing enquiry contents, extracting commercial requirements and advising all interested/participating departments of the requirements.
  • Attending “Pre‐Tender Meetings” and “Site Visits” and assessing all salient features.
  • Establishing working conditions and ensuring completion of the necessary Site Reports.
  • Performing “Quantity Take‐Offs” of materials and labour operations from G.A. Drawings, Schedules and Specifications. If necessary, establishing “Bills of Quantities” and providing Bills of Materials to facilitate material supply pricing.
  • Prepare and manage initial cost estimate using benchmark data to key cost areas and risk profile for teams increased focus.
  • Update initial budget as the project information, schedule and methodology are refined.
  • Manage the development and collation of the measured works / Direct and indirect cost element of the project.
  • To interpret the “Scope of Work” and where necessary, formulate and place Sub‐Contract Enquiries and appraise subsequent responses.
  • Ensure that cost planning and estimating are accurate and reflect the project requirements, methodology, phasing, constraints and overall risk profile.
  • Establishing Total Manhours and Indirect Cost estimates, to evaluate Plant, Staff, Site Supervision and Accommodation requirements.
  • Compile a Basis of Estimate document.
  • Summarising the estimate and in consultation with the business unit leadership team, arrive at a total estimate.
  • Liaising with the Client and all parties concerned during the Tender period.
  • Supporting the project commercial team for Earned Value reporting.
  • Assistance with EAC (Estimate at Completion) including reporting for Benchmarking data.
  • Support tender health checks and formal risk reviews.
  • Support wider business unit requirements such as digital toolkits, cash flow development and sustainability.
  • Provide mentoring on projects to Estimators and the bid teams, if required.
  • Support project / bid change control and value management.
  • Collection and reporting of Benchmarking data.
  • Undertake the role of Estimator on projects, where required.

Who we're looking for


To join us as a Senior Estimator, you’ll need:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body and/or relevant professional qualification is desirable, such as RICS/CIOB/CICES/RIBA/ICE/CIBSE.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in relevant sectors.
  • Candidates should have priced schemes in the above categories ranging in value up to £100m, with a working knowledge of pricing and quantification methods.

The candidates should also:

  • Have a working knowledge of best practice solutions and optimisation of innovative ideas.
  • Have experience of working with the NEC suite of contracts.
  • Be proficient in MS Excel and Word and be able to use estimating software.
  • Understand temporary works, their requirements and costs.
  • Be able to interrogate supply chain quotes, produce comparisons and highlight any exclusions / attendances / omissions.
  • Work with minimal supervision to achieve deadlines. Able to be a strong team player, as well as work on their own initiative.
