The University of Portsmouth is a global employer of choice where exceptional people create, share and apply knowledge that makes a difference
Experience the pride of being part of a select group – one of only four universities in the south-east of England to achieve a prestigious Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework. Additionally, we proudly rank among the top 140 universities globally in the Times Higher Young University World Rankings
Ambition, Responsibility and Openness drive our every endeavour. Join our esteemed institution with a proven track record of success, and where dedication to excellence is key. We want people to make their mark in a professional community that truly values people, innovation, and achievement
The Role: The programmes within the Institute for Professional and Flexible Learning allow working people to study for university qualifications - bachelors’ and masters’ degrees - without leaving their jobs. Each student works to an individual study programme embodied in a learning contract, and much of the learning comes from projects that form part of their daily work, which minimises the time spent studying. Our students work in a wide range of subject areas, but the majority are in engineering, maritime and health and safety and study via distance learning
We are seeking academically / professionally qualified people, with subject knowledge in any of the following specialisms to act as tutors for individual students studying our BSc/MSc degrees:
  • Cyber Security, Artificial Intelligence
  • Financial, Marketing, Communications
  • Risk and Security
  • Engineering, particularly:
  • Military Engineering (all services)
  • Electrical / Electronic Engineering
  • Building Services Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering / Renewable Energies
  • Robotics
  • Digital Development, Software

The role of the tutor is to give advice on the content of the student’s study programme, provide subject matter expertise, and to assess and mark the students’ work-based learning via written reports
We are looking for people who have experience of teaching in higher education or equivalent industrial, commercial or military experience. A higher degree and / or membership of an appropriate professional institution would be an advantage
Typically, tutors are paid for 6-12 hours for each student, and the work can be conducted mostly by e-mail and online shared drives, often out of normal working hours. On average a tutor may be supporting up to five students a year
Our students are interesting people in responsible jobs, and their studies are firmly embedded in their work. They are highly motivated and frequently expert in their fields, and so present fascinating challenges and opportunities for tutors. This role would suit an individual who would like to gain academic experience and who desires to support developing professionals in their field
