As part of our Major Projects division, you will be working directly on the project based in Derby, responsible for estimating and manage the estimating team in the costing of construction projects as part of a preconstruction team. You will develop strategies, lead, formulate and price tender opportunities. Minimising operational risks and ensuring accurate and effective delivery of the estimating services during the bid and tendering process. You will also establish and maintain positive and effective relationships with customers, partners and bid teams.


What you'll be doing


As a Managing Estimator you will:

  • Lead the project estimating team, including managing the workload and allocation of estimating resource within assigned bid / project team.
  • Establish an estimating strategy that ensures that all the below can be assessed in compliance with assurance requirements:
  • High level appraisal of customer requirements against budget.
  • Support the development of the bid budget and Input into pre-qualification process.
  • Develop the estimating strategy document as part of the overarching pre-construction plan.
  • Input into the commercial and negotiation strategy.
  • Analysing enquiry contents, extracting commercial requirements and advising all interested/participating departments of the requirements.
  • Attending “Pre‐Tender Meetings” and “Site Visits” and assessing all salient features.
  • Prepare and manage initial cost estimate using benchmark data to key cost areas and risk profile for teams increased focus.
  • Ensure that cost planning and estimating are accurate and reflect the project requirements, methodology, phasing, constraints and overall risk profile.
  • Review and assurance of the Basis of Estimate document.
  • Review and assurance of the estimate and in consultation with the business unit leadership team, arrive at a total estimate.
  • Liaising with the Client and all parties concerned during the Tender period.
  • Supporting the project commercial team for Earned Value reporting.
  • Periodic tender health checks and formal risk reviews to ensure that the identified risks are mitigated as far as possible in tender submissions.
  • Support wider business unit requirements such as digital toolkits, cash flow development and sustainability.
  • Provide mentoring on projects to Estimators and the bid teams, including commercial and technical advice.
  • Support project / bid change control and value management.
  • Maintain the company cost database.
  • Undertake the role of Estimator on projects, where required.

Who we're looking for


To join us as a Managing Estimator, you’ll need:

  • Membership of a relevant professional body and/or relevant professional qualification is desirable, such as RICS/CIOB/CICES/RIBA/ICE/CIBSE.
  • Minimum of 15 years’ experience in relevant sectors.
  • Candidates should have priced schemes in the above categories ranging in value up to £300m, with a working knowledge of pricing and quantification methods.

The candidates should also:

  • Have a working knowledge of best practice solutions and optimisation of innovative ideas.
  • Have experience of working with the NEC suite of contracts.
  • Be proficient in MS Excel and Word and be able to use estimating software.
  • Understand temporary works, their requirements and costs.
  • Be able to interrogate supply chain quotes, produce comparisons and highlight any exclusions / attendances / omissions.
  • Work with minimal supervision to achieve deadlines. Able to be a strong team player, as well as work on their own initiative.
