An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Engineer to join a thriving FMCG food manufacturing environment in Blackburn. This role offers a 4 on 4 off shift pattern, including both days and nights, with the added benefit of no Saturday night shifts and shorter Saturday day shifts, giving you more valuable weekend time than typical 24/7 patterns.

What You'll Do

As a Maintenance Engineer based in Blackburn, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the reliability of production machinery within a busy FMCG food manufacturing facility.

  • Work as an integral member of a small, multi-disciplined engineering team to ensure all machinery operates efficiently within the production environment.
  • Undertake planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on a wide range of equipment to proactively reduce the risk of breakdowns and maintain optimal performance.
  • Respond promptly to machine breakdowns by carrying out effective repairs while recording all actions taken to identify recurring issues and implement long-term solutions.
  • Collaborate closely with the Engineering Manager, Senior Engineer, and other departments to ensure timely supply of parts and resources necessary for maintenance activities.
  • Champion health, safety, and environmental policies by adhering to established procedures and promoting best practices throughout the site.
  • Mentor and coach less experienced engineers within the team, sharing your knowledge to foster skill development and deliver exceptional service to production teams.
  • Contribute actively to building maintenance projects as directed by management, ensuring facilities remain safe and operational at all times.
  • Drive root cause analysis initiatives following equipment failures, implementing countermeasures to prevent recurrence and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Utilise computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS) for accurate tracking of maintenance tasks, asset history, and compliance documentation.
  • Support internal audits related to health and safety processes while striving for ongoing enhancements in workplace standards.

What You Bring

To excel as a Maintenance Engineer in this role, you will bring substantial hands-on experience gained from similar positions within FMCG or food manufacturing environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise in both electrical and mechanical aspects of food processing machinery within an FMCG environment is essential for success in this role.
  • Comprehensive understanding of process control systems along with proven experience building electrical control systems from switchgear through software implementation.
  • Completion of an engineering apprenticeship accompanied by relevant qualifications such as BTEC ONC, HNC or HND in Electrical Engineering is required.
  • Ideally holds IEE qualification up to 18th edition Wiring Regulations or equivalent certification relevant to electrical safety standards.
  • Proven track record in fault-finding roles within similar fast-moving consumer goods settings, showcasing your ability to resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
  • Sound knowledge of HACCP, COSHH, GMP principles as well as familiarity with internal health & safety audits ensures compliance with industry regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills combined with a considerate approach when mentoring others or collaborating across departments enhances team effectiveness.
  • Experience with PLC fault finding alongside practical use of CMMS platforms supports robust maintenance planning and execution strategies.
  • Ability to deploy preventative maintenance strategies tailored for large-scale manufacturing sites demonstrates your commitment to minimising downtime.
  • A passion for quality assurance coupled with enthusiasm for continuous improvement initiatives helps drive best practice adoption throughout the business.
