The Grace Eyre Foundation is a charity based in Brighton & Hove and the wider Sussex community that has been working with people with a Learning Disability and autistic people since 1898. Our mission is to work towards being led by people with Learning Disabilities and autistic people to deliver high-quality housing, support and activities in their local communities. Introduction to the role:
Your role will be to support people with learning disabilities, autism and other complex needs with day-to-day tasks in either our supported living houses or out in the community supporting people to live independently in their own homes.
We support people with all aspects of their lives, such as daily living skills, medication, personal care and budgeting as well as accessing community activities and appointments. You will need to have good communication skills and just enjoy spending time with people.
We are looking for people who are patient, compassionate, understanding and able to use their own initiative. Your main area of work would be Crawley and surrounding areas, but we would be particularly interested in interviewing people who drive and/or are willing to travel and work at other services in Chichester and Bognor. It is a rewarding and varied role and one that really makes a difference to the lives of the people we support. It helps them to live a fulfilled life and achieve their goals and dreams with a little help from people who care.
Some learning disability and/or caring experience in supporting people either professionally or personally is preferred for this role.
A current valid driving license and access to a car would be advantageous for this role due to the vast areas covered and working across such a broad area.
Brief outline of the role:
As a flexible support worker you will be picking up various shifts in supported living and outreach services in Crawley and surrounding areas. Hours will be dependent on the needs of the services, with no fixed rota and a guaranteed minimum of 20 hours weekly. You will be required to be flexible with your time covering sleep ins and sometimes to cover sickness at short notice. Overtime is available at times, particularly if willing to travel to our other services in Chichester and Bognor. Although your main area to cover will be Crawley and the surrounding areas.
The individuals we support have told us they want staff who are patient, fun, caring understanding, listen to us and going out in the community. "We want help to try new things and help to look after myself and cook and clean with me and let me try things for myself before attempting to do things for me. They need to understand my needs and reassure me".
