About Motorway

Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace – our award winning, online-only platform connects private car sellers with over 7,500 verified dealers nationwide, who compete to offer the best price. Founded in 2017, our technology makes the process refreshingly easy, earning us an 'Excellent' Trustpilot rating with over 70,000 reviews. We're not just building a platform; we're changing how people sell cars.

Backed by leading investors like Index Ventures and ICONIQ Growth, and following a successful $190 million funding round, we're on a mission to transform the used car market.

The Opportunity

As a Lead Product Designer at Motorway, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the user experience of our products, from initial concept to launch and iteration. You will be responsible for leading design projects, collaborating closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver intuitive, engaging, and effective digital solutions. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact on our core products while also contributing to the growth and development of our design team.

What you'll be doing:

  • Leading Design Projects: Take ownership of complex design challenges, guiding them from discovery and ideation through to detailed design, testing, and implementation.
  • User-Centred Design: Champion a user-centred approach, conducting user research, usability testing, and gathering insights to inform design decisions and validate solutions.
  • Design Execution: Produce high-quality design deliverables including user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity mock-ups for mobile and web applications.
  • Collaboration: Work in close partnership with product managers and engineers throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure feasibility and deliver exceptional user experiences.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Establish strong relationships with product, engineering, and the wider organization, communicating clearly with stakeholders and representing product design at all levels.
  • Mentorship & Guidance: Provide mentorship and guidance to more junior product designers, sharing best practices and contributing to their professional development. You've had experience in mentoring and nurturing growth for junior and seasoned product designers.
  • Design System Contribution: Actively contribute to and evolve our design system, ensuring consistency and efficiency across all our products.
  • Driving Design Culture: Help foster our design culture by contributing to our weekly team rituals, running workshops, planning design-focused events, and other activities. You love running workshops to pull together new ideas and are mindful of encouraging all participants.
  • Continuous Improvement: Explore and encourage continuous learning and development for the team, playing an active role in developing our core design principles.

Requirements:

Our team comes from a diverse range of backgrounds and team fit is important to us. As our new Lead Product Designer, we expect that you will be passionate about crafting exceptional user experiences and will have several of the following attributes:

  • Extensive experience working as a Senior or Lead Product Designer, with a proven track record of delivering successful digital products (mobile and web applications).
  • Experience working on B2C products, with a deep understanding of consumer user journeys.
  • Demonstrable experience leading design projects independently and collaborating effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Experience experimentation methods, with a focus on optimizing user journeys and conversion funnels, is a nice-to-have.
  • Proficiency with design and prototyping tools (we use Figma).
  • Strong understanding of user-centred design principles and methodologies.
  • Experience in conducting and synthesizing user research and usability testing.
  • You've led online and offline sessions with stakeholders to validate design decisions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and rationale to diverse audiences.
  • A proactive and positive attitude, with the ability to make a positive impact in a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience within a two-sided marketplace is a nice-to-have.
