The Associate Software Engineer learns on the job by delivering software components. They support development, delivery and maintenance of Vitality software products and develop skills whilst working under supervision to deliver stories in a multidisciplinary team. They understand the different types of testing and are aware of, but not responsible for, security. This role will not sit on problems, but proactively seek guidance from others in order to progress.
Key Actions
- Codes, tests, corrects and documents software under the direction of others in a core subset of software technologies employed by the team.
- Provides support in fixing faults by following agreed procedures.
- Uses automation and peer review to assess the knowledge and application of the standards.
- Observe and engage with others to understand the context of the application and where it fits in to the wider landscape.
- Working alongside more experienced software engineers, understand the needs and requirements of internal stakeholders.
- Participate in learning opportunities relevant to the role to develop skills, tools and techniques used in software development at Vitality.
- Work effectively together with others across varying areas of expertise to achieve the required results.
- Ability to communicate clearly, ask for help when needed, and contribute positively to team dynamics.
- Awareness of the software development lifecycle & basic understanding of testing types.
- Demonstrated curiosity, openness to feedback, and a proactive attitude toward self-improvement and skill development.
- Basic proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript)
