National Gas has an exciting and important role in achieving net zero and in leading a fair energy transition for the UK. We will do this by developing the green gas system of tomorrow, while delivering the natural gas needs of today.

About The Role

We’re looking for an Operations Cyber Engineer with a background in Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering to take on a key technical leadership role within our operations.

In this position, you’ll act as the Cyber security & compliance lead across the Scotland and North of England Region. Supporting with development of company wide policy and implementation to ensure we remain secure from cyber and security threats. You will act as the main point of technical escalation for the Technicians in the region who deliver cyber maintenance across Operational Technology on the National Transmission System.

You’ll lead the resolution of defects and operational risks, your role will require on site visibility to enhance our awareness and capability across our Technicians and Officers. This is a unique opportunity to help shape a newly defined role, where you’ll develop and implement cyber security governance at the operational level. Translating central security policies into practical Local Work Instructions, you’ll guide your team in applying these processes to a wide variety of systems.

You’ll be responsible for driving continuous improvement, ensuring the effective use of resources, and delivering tangible improvements to cyber resilience and operational risk management.

A key part of your role will involve becoming the operational lead for a specific control system. You’ll receive external training and act as the first point of contact across operations for that platform, supporting activities such as backups, IDS alerts, and system upgrades.

We understand the pace at which the cyber security landscape evolves, and we’re committed to supporting your growth. While prior cyber experience is an advantage, it’s not essential. We’ll provide comprehensive training in both National Gas-specific protocols and internationally recognised cyber security standards to set you up for success.

What We’re Looking For

You’ll bring solid engineering experience within Electrical and Instrumentation Engineering, with a clear understanding of engineering policy, regulatory compliance, and the safe operation of gas infrastructure. Experience in working with Permit to Work systems and the ability to safely set people to work is essential.

We’re looking for someone who can provide technical leadership, resolve complex engineering issues, and use asset performance data to prioritise maintenance activities effectively.

  • Strong project management skills and a proactive mindset are key.
  • You should be confident in analysing problems, making sound decisions under pressure, and maintaining high personal standards of integrity, safety, and professionalism.
  • Effective communication, both written and verbal, is essential, as is the ability to build positive working relationships across teams and with external stakeholders.
  • You will be technically curious, solution-oriented, and eager to contribute to both the immediate challenges and long-term improvements in our cyber operations.

A BTEC Higher National Certificate or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline is required, and ideally, you’ll be registered or working toward registration as an Incorporated Engineer. A full and valid UK driving licence is also essential.

Although not mandatory, experience working on gas operational sites, exposure to control systems such as PLCs or RTUs, previous cyber training, or an IOSH Managing Safely qualification would be beneficial.

Given the extensive training and development offered, the successful candidate will be asked to commit to a three-year training agreement following the completion of the provided courses.

If you’re ready to take on a role that combines engineering leadership with the evolving challenges of operational cyber resilience, we want to hear from you.
